I just learned about #ESA’s new journal “Earth Stewardship”.
Earth Stewardship has a beautiful vision of, well, stewarding the Earth. I am curious to see how it will develop.
From the 1st Editorial: “The scope is well aligned with the recent expansion of ecology across discipline boundaries with the potential to inform integrative pathways of development and ultimately of transformation toward an environmentally, socially, and ethically just planet Earth. In that sense, Earth Stewardship transcends academia. It champions community engagement and the role of diverse knowledge systems, valuing the active participation of communities, government representatives, civil societies, practitioners, artists, poets, storytellers, and many others.”

Anyone know any academic journals that publish on/about peer review?
On this day in 2019, I received my first official publication of the 21st century (my previous publication was 25 years earlier). I also illustrated the back cover. That's a closeup of a traditional Inuit dogsled made from bones. The last para says it all - "eLife’s model ultimately leaves it up to readers to evaluate a paper’s merits based on its text and accompanying peer reviews, because of the absence of an “accept” or “reject” decision by editors. But Schekman calls that “wishful thinking” and says the editors’ decision helps readers. “Who has the time [to read that content]? When it comes to open access maybe it’s time to acknowledge that the didactic model is just not going to work.
Think about the number of peer-reviewed journal articles that, even after all these years, still make the kind of mistakes that could be caught by a quick online search. Or all those newspapers and magazines that continue to commission opinion pieces from authors who aren’t really on top of the subject.
If these people wanted to learn surely they would have by now. Clearly they don’t, whether it’s for reasons of politics, profit, wishful thinking or just an ingrained professional conservativism. So, rather than producing an endless stream of books, essays, statements, reports, interviews, conference papers and social media posts trying to engage with them, might we not be better off directing our time and energy elsewhere?
