Honolulu, Hawaii bicycle infrastructure. Ward Center. Very restricted area, but it looks like someone managed to talk them into a decent redesign of this area. Woefully lacking elsewhere, especially in tourist heavy Waikiki, where cycling on sidewalks is illegal and there are essentially no safe bicycling areas on the streets. All the tourists I saw were bicycling on the sidewalks, the limited bike lanes were being used by motorcycles and mopeds. That said, significant pedestrian traffic offsets lack of bicycle friendliness. #infrastructure #BikeTooter #ActiveTransportation

Extremely tight deadline for public response if you are in Thousand Oaks or Newbury Park to their Active Transportation Plan update. If you are a pedestrian or cyclist who is finding issues with the city, deadline is now 5/17/25 (yes, ONE day) to submit comments. Bad intersection? Missing/bad sidewalk? No way to get your wheelchair across a curb? Traffic too fast? Now is the time for input:

California Assembly Bill 1014
#AB1014
#SlowSpeedsSaveLives

Just today a woman who bikes sent me a video showing a motor vehicle as it struck her at the end of West Broadway Urban Village in Seaside. We shuddered to think how much more she’d have suffered if it were going faster.

"So far, the bill has faced no registered opposition and has drawn support from a broad coalition, including the California Bicycle Coalition / #CalBike, Rural County Representatives of California and Streets Are For Everyone. Supervisor Chris Lopez has also shown support for the proposal.” β€”Report by KYARRA HARRIS in #MontereyHerald

Ok, here's something in a more light-hearted vein. Or maybe it's serious? It can be hard to differentiate sometimes:

"Active Transportation – Walking, biking, scooting, and other low-carbon ways to arrive at a meeting to discuss why it’s too hard to walk or bike anywhere."

Parallel street next to the street with the extremely busy street with the "bike lane". I took this street instead where I could. Did not have any cars pass me the same time. If there were some intelligent thought, the city would instead make this a formal bicycle corridor instead of the main route. Painting bicycle lanes on this street would just cost paint, but help encourage that usage. #BikeTooter #transportation #ActiveTransportation

If your bicycle lane isn't safe for children to ride in, is it a bicycle lane, really? (You will note I took the sidewalk instead) #BikeTooter #Bicycling #Transportation #ActiveTransportation

Whew, bus/bicycling to our local city's Earth Day: left at 9:30am, finally back at 3pm. Normally would be about 15 min drive each way. (Did stop a few other places on the way).

Lessons:

1. DO NOT TRUST DRIVERS TURNING RIGHT (nearly flattened twice, but didn't trust the drivers speeding toward the intersection)

2. OUR BIKE LANES ARE NOT USABLE BY CHILDREN

3. It's faster (but more work) to bicycle in some places than wait for the hourly bus, especially if you time it wrong.

4. Most people in our town drive everywhere, even to Earth Day.

5. SIDEWALKS WORK BETTER THAN MANY OF OUR BICYCLE LANES (not much space, but less chance of being killed by a car driver).

This is what passes for a bus stop in Edmonton. Yes, you have to wait standing in that mud hole or the bus won't stop.

Where we're standing now? That's the only multi-use active transportation path that seems to go anywhere in the west end (and even then, it ends at 163 St when all the businesses are on 170 St and on).

As such, it is a heavily-used path which only becomes unused during a forced "off-season" when maintenance is neglected to the point of making it unusable, and users are forced onto the street where they are often run off the road by aggressive drivers.

The road the cars are driving on? Huge 4-lane road which even during rush hour has mostly empty space but traffic drives so fast and aggressively (with no traffic calming whatsoever), that it is very difficult for active transportation to get in, which they must do (or find a completely different route altogether) during the many long months when the heavily-used MUP is left unusable.

Even though there is SO much empty space on this road, if traffic gets slowed down for a split second (which generally only happens when somebody is turning left, and through traffic passes beside them), the horns come out on FULL BLAST. Tons of aggression and road rage on this street, largely contributed to by the autocentric "stroad" design.

This is a classic example of infrastructure and maintenance designed to force an end of active transportation supposedly by concentrating on automobile traffic, except that this focus on cars gives no actual benefit to them, except to make them feel more privileged.

Note: Despite its looks, this road is more dangerous for the drivers than others. I have seen so many near crashes on it when I used to use it regularly. The road is wide and straight, but that just means people can't get their foot off the gas.

Although they take their anger out on the rest of us, it's the people driving on the road who are most at risk. Driving does NOT make you safer.

A Short History of Traffic Engineering

1800: Travel by horse and walking shows straight lines.

1900: Travel by horse, walking, and bicycle shows straight lines. Travel by trolley shows a slightly wavy line.

1920: Travel by bicycle and walking shows a straight line. Travel by trolley is still the same slightly wavy line. Travel by car is a shorter, more wavy line.

1950's - present: Travel by bicycle is a completely disjointed mess of short segmented paths which do not connect, interspersed with crossings all over the place. Travel by foot is a series of detours and crosswalks. Travel by transit is a series of big long detours. Travel by car is a straight line.
