I was vaguely familiar with Laufey before this but I have only ever heard sweeping orchestral ballad stuff from her that sounded very nostalgic and mid-century but I had no idea that she considers herself a “modern jazz” singer and that it’s a reputation she’s getting. Adam’s look at the cultural and musical history of jazz here is such a great way to put it all into (fair) context.

When I was a kid, I was taught classical violin at 7 but hated it - it put me off learning music till I was 12. I've known my entire life that all I wanted to do was be a musician and I'm lucky enough to do it as a job now.
Even now, the implicit white supremacy of so much of the classical music world annoys the fuck out of me.
