I spent part of my studio time this week coil building. I want to make a piece that is a prayer for rain, based on the archetypal, spherical #African water pot. This form shows up on other continents, too, just not as much. Indians make a similarly shaped water pot called matka. The form is generous and planetary. I began building her on Tuesday and finished today. Next week, I will refine & smooth the surface, then decorate using symbols of rain, clouds and sea. Enjoy your weekend! #pottery

A large, clay pot, unfired and still moist, on a wooden shelf next to a mug, for scale. The pot was coil built with brown clay and is spherical with a wide, short flared neck. The large pot is about 3-4 times the height of the mug and just as wide. The mug is brightly decorated with chartreuse green and earth tones. There is clear plastic bunched behind the large pot, almost framing it. It was pushed back to take the photo. The wall behind is a pale, soft blue-green.
