It's not just sheep that like solar over farmland - solar panels provide farmworkers shelter from the sun and reduces fatigue:

'A recent study in Colorado USA found that farmworkers can also benefit. It spoke to workers and took various physical heat stress metrics, finding that the panels can help farms avoid conditions conducive to dangerous heat stress.'

The impact of agrivoltaics on soil properties
New research shows how agrivoltaic systems can reshape soil by altering moisture, temperature, and microbial activity, creating heterogeneous zones under and between panels. Proper design and management can boost soil health and crop resilience, especially in degraded or arid regions

Agrivoltaics as a systems innovation: Multi-dimensional benefits from global studies across climate, agriculture, energy, and ecosystems.

"From this review, it is projected that implementing agrivoltaics across selected crops and countries could potentially result in an additional agricultural yield of over 1800 million tonnes globally. The maximum theoretical nutritional value of this produce is sufficient to meet the dietary requirements of more than 2.1 billion people annually. This presents a significant opportunity to the world in its fight against hunger"

Projected additional crop yield and income for selected countries: a) Germany, b) Italy, c) U.S., d) China, e) Japan, f) Malaysia, and g) Canada. The left y-axis represents the additional agricultural yield enabled by agrivoltaic integration and is depicted using bars. The right y-axis represents the corresponding economic potential derived from these additional yields and is depicted using diamond markers. Of all the crops evaluated, maize had the highest impact worldwide. Global estimates suggest 1.6 billion tonnes of increased production translating into USD 387 billion of earnings. On the other hand, at a national level, Germany's potato sector performed well - generating USD 3.9 billion in income through 1.28 million tonnes of additional sales. Other crops like lettuce and okra though dispensed lower tonnages for respective countries, but still offered significant gains internationally.

#Agrivoltaics is the practice of purposefully shading agricultural crop lands with solar panels
in order to enjoy the dual benefits of solar electricity and increased food production.

A new study I
co-authored with my colleague, Uzair Jamil, found that
๐Ÿ‘ partial shading to benefit crop production even works when the solar panels do not.

This has interesting policy ramifications, particularly in Alberta Canada

Solar farm projects in the Canadian province of Alberta have been put on hold or cancelled
because of a recent increase in regulations in the province.

The new regulations ban solar panels from agricultural land
and force solar developers to fully fund decommissioning upfront.

As a result,
many originally profitable projects have been made unfeasible
-- because of rules aimed at preventing a repeat of the orphaned oil and gas wells fiasco.

Last year, we found that you could increase strawberry yield by 18 per cent under solar panels compared to strawberries in an open field. This agrivoltaic crop yield bump has been shown for dozens of other crops and solar panel combinations all over the world, including basil, broccoli, celery, corn, grapes, kale, lettuce, pasture grass, peppers, potatoes, tomatoes and more

I very much like the studies and reports about agrivoltaics, the benefits of shading crops and critters with elevated solar panels.

And I'm also a bit sad that it took so long to to this point in our hyperspecialized world.

Stealing a meme from the tech world: They invented trees! Without the extra erosion control, ๐Ÿ™‚.

Trees were common in fields, on meadows in many places before large machines.

This #SolarFarm in #Alaska Provides Something Extra: Free #Food
This test case in Houston, Alaska, for combining food and #solar farms, a practice called #agrivoltaics, was designed as a model for other communities seeking energy and food security. Europe, which has ambitious climate goals and limited land, has been exploring high-latitude agrivoltaics in recent decades, but this is the first American project on an industrial-scale solar array.

Solar farm leases provide stable, predictable income that helps financially secure family farms and boosts rural tax revenues with minimal land impact

Modern farming is characterized by high capital investment and volatile costs for inputs like fertilizer and fuel. Solar development offers a steady, long-term economic counterpoint to these pressures, helping to secure the continuation of family-owned agricultural land
