#ailurophobia

Happy Cat/Rabbit year!

"On the historical side, the absence of the Cat isn't anything personal or related to ailurophobia. Rather, it's thought that the Chinese zodiac was conceived a good thousand or more years before the domesticated cat was introduced to China. Of course, wild cats were familiar, which is why the Tiger is included."

@nev I agree that marking organism pics as "sensitive media" is not worth it. Hashtag-filtering works well, plus the awkwardness of displaying hidden media and CWs is a considerable downer in terms of user experience. Also, deciding what should be sensitive or CW'd seems futile, and overuse of those tools dilutes their effectiveness when truly needed. And I don't see people flagging their flower, cat, and fish pics (#anthophobia, #ailurophobia, #ichthyophobia).

@Kirundo let's say we start hiding pictures of #spiders because some people have #arachnophobia. What would be next? Hiding pictures of public spaces because of #agarophobia? No more cat pictures because of #ailurophobia ?

Makes no sense to me.

Not unlike Sisyphus, I am adding a long list of emoji to my 'I really, really do not want to see any photos of cats or dogs' filter.

At the risk of being brutally cancelled by the pet lovers of Mastodon, I really, really wish people would add generic hashtags like 'cat' or 'dog' to their photos of cats or dogs.

My vast 'Don't Show Cats & Dogs' filter now includes specific crossbreeds, for goodness' sake.
