@daveburb with an exception of a few years (~09-12 on Thunderbird) I've been using KMail since its inception exclusively, since none of the alternatives could come close to it.

Sure, I had some fights with its underlying #Akonadi, but what KMail offers in functionality, customizability integration and ergonomics easily made up for it.

Finally got Kmail working (:
When you add an account you get an initial popup (on first install), so you can hook your account into Kmail. But if you fuck that up somehow (me) and don't check the "can edit, delete and send messages" box, then you just can't do shit. Tried almost everything (including nuking the app and the hook) but it still kept that faulty hook.
How'd I get it working then?
Just delete everything under LibKGAPI inside KdeWallet. Took a day to figure out :P

I'm really sorry to hear this. I can tell that it serves me well, but this doesn't help you. You will certainly find a good alternative. Any plans already?

I tried to like #kmail and the whole #KDE PIM thing, I really did, but after several months of suffering where it worked more against me than for me, I decided enough is enough.

This Outlook-level over-engineered piece of crap is getting purged from my computer, together with the #akonadi malware.

okay, 5 minutes later, I find out that KOrganizer and Merkuro Calendar both depend on #Akonadi, so I'm going to start by trying the Thunderbird calendar instead. :P

@ts-new Mittlerweile löppt #Akonadi tatsächlich relativ "sturzfrei". Meine Güte, damals... eine Terminanfrage kam als abgelehnt zurück, beim Verschieben aus Kmail raus *Klatsch-Batsch* alles mehr oder weniger unreparierbar zerschreddert. Mailkonto hinzufügen, Fehler im Passwort oder so... Dialog geht dreifach erneut auf und Zack... siehe oben.

Heiße Zeiten damals, hat sich aber wirklich gemausert. Anfangs war es zwar, gerade mit Blick auf #KMail, manchmal ein wahres Drama, aber ich hatte mir damals sogut wie möglich gemerkt, wann welche Probleme aufgetreten waren. Dabei geblieben war/bin ich bis heute.

Denn, den Komfort, den ich (trotz der früheren Probleme) mit Komponenten wie #KAddressbook, #KOrganizer und all den anderen Komponenten genieße, möchte ich nicht mehr missen.

Und mit etwas Glück... ist "Drama, Baby, ja nun einigermaßen gegessen. :smile:

Moin, @Heiko R. das mit KMail hat mich auch überrascht, genauso wie #FairEmail.

Ich selbst benutze privat hauptsächlich Mutt und zusätzlich auch ein wenig KMail. Ich finde auch, das es in der Vergangenheit im Zusammenhang mit dem #Akonadi -Backend geholpert hatte. Das ist aber merklich weniger geworden.

@benlk I use #kmail since I can remember, with the exception of the time when they were fighting getting #akonadi to work - which it does since many years at this point of course. A workhorse of my life :)

IT WORKED - finally I'M IN!!!!
Installing the prebuilt images with fastboot failed, but resorting to pmbootstrap worked - so now I have a #oneplus6T phone with #postmarketos and #plasmamobile 6 on it.
I did order a simcard for it, but I haven't gotten that yet, so testing calls and sms must wait a few days.

How ever lots of things works - I can browse the internet with angelfish, look at photos, connect to bluetooth devices, record sound, play music, use KDE Connect, set alarms and use timers, view PDFs, use the shell and more ...

i can't use #tokodon (it freezes when trying to log in), so this is posted from my laptop, and my #nextcloud account configured in the plasmamobile settings does not work - no contacts or calendar events that way, or browsing files for that matter. #Okular shows a meaningful error message regarding files: webdavs:// fails. Not sure why #akonadi fails.

Today was my last day on #KDE #akademy , so here are some personal highlights regarding #kdepim

▶️ #akonadi resources in #rust are now closer to reality
▶️ Akonadi Resource for Outlook/Microsoft365 is being worked on (in Rust :rust_ferris: !!)
▶️ We have a dedicated EWS server for testing, expect bugfixes!

It was amazing being on Akademy again after 5 years and seeing all my KDE friends. Thanks everyone for a great Akademy and see you next year :ablobcatheartsqueeze:

@kde Is there a way to validate akonadiserverrc file? I am trying to setup an ansible playbook for this. When I screw up the config, akonadi exits gracefully (with exit code 0!) . What do I do now? #KDE #Akonadi

ok so renaming a folder (with something like nextcloud) doesn't sync properly to akonadi- I do not know why or how... or where to report this... someone help?

A lazy (and free!) Saturday, time to play around and experiment. How about #akonadi managed by #systemd ? #KDE

(Don't worry, I'm not merging this (for now 😈). I'm not even sure if it's a good or a bad idea. And even if it gets merged, it will be optional. I rewrote the process management code to make it extensible, so in the future we can also run Akonadi as a Windows Service or whatever is native on MacOS, with fallback to the mechanism we use today)

@db_geek #Akonadi was definitely related. I stopped it with `akonadictl stop`, then launched #KMail, and now it *seems* OK. Font rendering is super weird in KMail, though.

I don't know, if #KDE 6 is already using Akonadi.
By default on #KDE 5, Akonadi is using MySQL / MariaDB.

When #Canonical built #UbuntuTouch and decided in favour of #Qt/QML as basis for its GUI stack they also kept their #PIM based on #Evolution, which is no surprise given the fact the alternative would have been #Akonadi and a whole mySQL server running on a mobile.
