The stark black-and-white palette and bold lines give the portrait a timeless, dignified presence, as if the figureโ€”likely evoking the memory of Ndiouga Diengโ€”is carved into cultural history rather than simply drawn. The clean profile, the patterned background lines, and the almost woodcut-like textures create a sense of stability and reverence, which fits the tone of a tribute from a band known for blending tradition with modernity. Even the vertical typography and arrow motif feel ceremonial, directing the viewer upward as if lifting the legacy being honored. There's something both minimalist and monumental about the design: it doesnโ€™t try to explain the man, but it frames him with the respect and clarity that long-standing musical icons often command.

The cover for BVA โ€“ Be Very Aware gives me the sense of someone retreating deep underground to escape a world thatโ€™s quietly falling apart above. The warm, dark tunnel frames a chaotic landscape of crooked buildings, overgrown greenery, and discarded objects sinking into murky waterโ€”as if the outside world has lost its balance. Meanwhile, the character lounging inside the burrow feels strangely calm, smoking and listening to music, almost detached from whatever collapse is happening overhead. The colors shift between dull greens and broken grays outside, contrasted with the softer browns inside the tunnel, suggesting a tension between awareness and avoidance. Even the wooden sign reading Be Very Aware feels ironic in this setting, like a warning that the characterโ€”and maybe the listenerโ€”is choosing to half-hear while drifting in their own little bubble. The whole scene gives off this vibe of being conscious of the mess around you, but also too tired or too numb to climb back out just yet.

The surfers riding the waves give me the sense of musicians balancing instinct and chaosโ€”gliding forward together the same way the bandโ€™s sound flows after more than a decade of shared intuition. The jagged rock formations rising from the water, shaped loosely like letters, look both solid and strange, maybe hinting at how their music stands firmly on funk and soul while still bending into unexpected forms. Even the shark with its exaggerated grin feels like part threat, part jokeโ€”an echo of the bandโ€™s willingness to dive into experimentation without taking themselves too seriously. Under the warm, sketch-like sun, the whole composition feels alive, unpredictable, and joyfully unpolished, much like the genre-blending spirit the group and Tzapa bring to this EP.

Album cover of Phonograph Phoenix by DJ Abilities. The artwork features a surreal, faceless figure in a knit hat, leaning forward with exaggerated green gloves that stretch into layered ripples of pink, red, and pastel tones. The background erupts with fiery oranges, cool blues, and dotted patterns, blending painterly textures into a vivid, dreamlike composition.

Album cover of Obelisk Movements by Micranots. The artwork mixes cosmic abstraction with urban collage, dominated by sharp red and white streaks cutting through a dark, space-like background. Two tall obelisks rise in the foreground, covered in subtle etched symbols. Neon green rings float around them, while splashes of blue and green paint scatter across the scene. At the bottom, a small black-and-white photo of the duo is blended into the layered textures, giving the composition a gritty, futuristic feel.

An illustration of a purple pony on a dizzyingly colourful carousel, with an apathetic expression. Album cover of Better Heard Than Seen by Dante Martin. A dark, gritty rendering of a city forms the backdrop, intentionally blurred to create a dreamlike, uneasy tone. Above the skyline floats a large green eye, the only sharp feature in the composition, drawing immediate attention and implying themes of watching, judgment, or hidden awareness. Down the middle of the artwork, a bright, empty human outline cuts through the scenery, suggesting disappearance, anonymity, or a presence felt but not seen. The muted palette and smoky textures give the cover a moody underground aesthetic consistent with introspective or street-level hip-hop.

Favorite new album cover art of 2025

A new category for this year is favorite album cover art. Figured since there will be a grammy for this, this blogโ€™s two cents worth should be thrown into the mix. So here are my favorites from 2025. Hope you enjoy these images. So often, like music itself, album art is a personal choice in style and focus. Peace and Happy Thanksgiving to all!

โ€”โ€”-

All Washed Up by Cheap Trick:

Who cares if theyโ€™ve been around for a half-century, this whimsical album cover says it all both in its title and the hilarious image. Each of the four washing machines is personalized to epitomize each the four (4) band members from guitarist and lyricist Rick Nielsenโ€™s checker-flagged fashions to a soapy โ€œZโ€ for lead singer Robin Zander in the second machine onward. Hey, and the new music is pretty damn good too. Well done!

As I Watch My Life Online by Late Night Drive Home:

In our dystopianesque world of digital addictions or constant doom-scrolling, texting, and video posting, this album cover says it allโ€ฆas do the tracks on the album. When you get to the point when you are scrolling online in the showerโ€ฆsomethingโ€™s truly amiss.

Fall Back EP by Florence Road:

Love the surreal and hypnotic feel of this cover art. It is memorizing without being dark or sinister โ€” just the four band members crossing the Irish countryside with an abstract background image mixing shades of sky, clouds, and fog in a unique and comforting pattern.

Fall Back EP by Florence Road -Source: en.wikipedia.org

Billboard Heart by Deep Sea Diver:

A shimmering wall of red filaments floating effortlessly above a coastline against a blue sky horizon. Like a billboard, the filaments would be hard to miss and the red links it to our hearts.

Billboard Heart by Deep Sea Diver โ€“ Source: en.wikipedia.org

Salt of the Lee EP by Cliffords:

For a band coming from the seacoast city of Cork, Ireland, this image of a seafarersโ€™ weather vane is a perfect reflection of home and the essence of this historic city.

Salt of the Lee EP by Cliffords โ€“ Source: deezer.com

Altar by NewDad:

The gothic-style house on the cover was built during the recording of the bandโ€™s Safe EP from early 2025 and continued/completed construction during the creation of the Altar album and the videos for each song. Given the Altar album includes several songs reflecting the bandโ€™s homesickness after moving from Galway, Ireland to London, the cover may also reflect an image of their home town.

Welcome To My Blue Sky by Momma:

A cover that reflects the linkages between the two female founders of the band and their importance to one another. Simple, yet still symbolic.
