La presidente Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo explicó que podría existir la posibilidad de que los migrantes mexicanos residentes en Estados Unidos participaran en la elección de sus representantes diplomáticos, en específico de los cónsules mexicanos que los atienden en el exterior.
Durante su tradicional conferencia de prensa desde Palacio Nacional, celebrada este 8 de octubre, Sheinbaum fue cuestionada sobre la posibilidad de que la comunidad migrante tenga voz en la designación de los funcionarios consulares.
“Quizá lo que podrías abrir en principio son propuestas, que se tome en cuenta la opinión de nuestros paisanos allá. Si hay una persona que conoce bien el tema, que está preparada y que ha vivido allá, por supuesto que se puede considerar”, afirmó.
Participación de migrantes en el exterior
La propuesta generó interés entre los asistentes, quienes resaltaron que una medida de este tipo fortalecería el vínculo entre los connacionales y las instituciones mexicanas. Sheinbaum añadió que el objetivo sería asegurar que las necesidades de los migrantes fueran atendidas por funcionarios que comprendan su realidad.
La mandataria subrayó, sin embargo, que cualquier modificación en los procesos de selección diplomática tendría que alinearse con la ley vigente, la cual establece los requisitos de elegibilidad y las restricciones sobre nacionalidad.
“Existen condiciones legales que deben revisarse, por ejemplo, si un cónsul puede tener doble nacionalidad al ocupar el cargo”, puntualizó la presidente durante la conferencia.
Hasta el momento, la Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores (SRE) no ha emitido una postura oficial sobre los mecanismos que podrían implementarse en caso de que la propuesta se concrete.
Migrantes mexicanos en Alligator Alcatraz
A finales de agosto de 2025, el Consulado General de México en Miami informó que 78 mexicanos adicionales permanecían recluidos en el centro de detención migratoria conocido como Alligator Alcatraz, o “Centro de Detención de los Everglades”, bajo custodia de las autoridades estadounidenses.
Con este nuevo registro, la cifra total ascendió a 384 mexicanos detenidos en esas instalaciones, de acuerdo con el reporte presentado por el cónsul Rutilio Escandón, quien encabezó una visita para constatar las condiciones de los connacionales.
Durante la inspección, Escandón, acompañado del área de Protección Consular, entrevistó a 14 detenidos para evaluar su estado físico, acceso a servicios y necesidades médicas. Según el informe, los entrevistados “se encontraban en buenas condiciones”.
El diplomático solicitó a las autoridades estadounidenses que se garantizara el “trato digno y respetuoso” hacia los migrantes, así como atención médica oportuna para quienes la requirieran. –sn–
