An international collaboration called exoALMA is using our telescopes to s peer through the dusty disks where planets are born. Thanks to their newly developed advanced imaging techniques, exoALMA has revealed the most sharp images of young solar systems, as never seen before. This research project has just published 17 papers, with several more coming on the several months.

The exoALMA collaboration is using ALMA to conduct a comprehensive planet hunting campaign in the sub-mm regime. They claim to be the first to focus on still-forming planets, instead of fully formed ones.

Unlike traditional planet-hunting methods that look for a young planet's direct light, exoALMA looks for the effects planets have on their surroundings. This approach potentially allows to detect much younger planets than ever before. "It's like trying to spot a fish by looking for ripples in a pond, rather than [the] fish itself.”

Though we have learned much about #exoplanets, there is still much we do not know about the steps of planet formation and the precise cosmic recipes that spawn the wide array of planetary bodies we have already uncovered.

Astronomers have conducted one of the deepest surveys ever of #protoplanetary disks, the planet-forming dust belts around young #stars.

The disks are as diverse as are the forming planetary systems.

Swirling through the Milky Way's central zone, dust and gases constantly churn as energetic shock waves ripple throughout. An international team of astronomers using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array ( #ALMA ) have sharpened our view of this action by a factor of 100, discovering a surprising new filamentary structure in this mysterious region of space.

Although the galaxy's central molecular zone (CMZ) has long been known to be [b]a region filled with swirling dust and gas molecules cycling through formation and destruction[/b], the mechanism that drives this process has remained elusive. Molecules serve as tracers for various processes in molecular clouds, with silicon monoxide (SiO) being particularly useful in detecting the presence of shock waves.

"We can envision these as space tornados: they are violent streams of gas, they dissipate quickly, and they distribute materials into the environment efficiently." It remains unknown how these slim filaments initially arise, but shock processes emerge as a likely explanation, Yang's team reports.

This breakthrough offers a more detailed view of the dynamic processes occurring in the CMZ, and suggests a cyclical process of material circulation. First, shocks act as a mechanism to create these slim filaments, releasing SiO and several complex organic molecules such as CH3OH, CH3CN, and HC3N into the gas phase and into the interstellar medium.

EHT Reveals New Insights of Jets from Supermassive Black Holes. ALMA is a big part of EHT, and in this case provided the most accurate calibration for the observations, which was used later for the longer baselines between EHT telescopes.
