deep in my mind I believe everything is possible…

Waltz of a Ghetto Fly is one of the albums of the oughts as far as I’m concerned. it is filled with sweet funky soulful grooves. Amp Fiddler’s debut was well hyped in the music media I was checking out at the time. it reminded me of the hype for Erykah Badu seven years earlier and as it was with her the hype was more than warranted. Waltz of a Ghetto Fly really hits my sweet spot.

Amp Fiddler, who died of cancer this past December at 65, is a Detroiter through and through. he played keyboards and toured with George Clinton and P-Funk from the mid-80s through the mid-90s. he mentored beatmaker extraordinaire, J Dilla, on the MPC and also introduced him to Q-Tip from A Tribe Called Quest.

in the early 2000s, he began working with House Music legend, Moodymann (Kenny Dixon Jr.). I first encountered Amp’s music on his classic Deep House collaboration with KDJ, Amp Dog Knight’s I’m Doing Fine (2002). he also played on techno wizard, Carl Craig’s jazz project, The Detroit Experiment.

Superficial is the one tune here geared toward the dancefloor, but as I like to say the rest of the album knows were the dancefloor is located. all of this record will have you moving, swaying and tapping your foot. for anyone who hasn’t checked Amp Fiddler out this is an excellent place to start.
