Two amphipods from the Cyproideidae family, each around 3mm in body length, rest on a coral. Commonly called “ladybugs of the sea”, these tiny creatures display striking colouration and symmetry.

‘Supergiant’ #sea creature lurks in more than half the #ocean
An animal the size of your forearm may not, at first, appear to deserve the “supergiant” label, but according to #deepsea researcher and lead author of the study, Dr Paige Maroni, they’re “ginormous” compared to other #amphipods. First discovered in the 1800s, but considered relatively rare, could inhabit up to 59% of the world’s deep #oceans according to a new study from the University of Western Australia.

Rare giant "shrimp" is more widespread than previously believed, new findings reveal phys.org/news/2025-05-rare-gia

The supergiant #amphipod Alicella gigantea may inhabit over half of the world’s oceans royalsocietypublishing.org/doi

"#Amphipods like A. gigantea are #shrimp-like #crustaceans known for their narrow frames and a signature hump-backed curl in their posture. They roam the #DeepSea, from the abyssal depths (3,000–6,000 m) to beyond hadal zones (>6,000 m)"

Highland springs, north Iceland.

Underground streams break out from underneath leaky strata. In this case ice-age moraines, but in others lavafields.

The springs harbour live and the underground rivers have microorganisms and top predator in small freshwater amphipods

Only endemic invertebrates in iceland, that have lived through couple of Ice-ages (>5 million years)

@jstevenyork
At least you didn't call it a "crab-like" as "Live science" did.
#Amphipods are not #shrimps (ok, one group is called "skeleton shrimps", but they don't even resemble shrimps tbh. and Dulcibella is not from that one).
And this thing looks pretty normal for deep-water Amphipods:

Land use influences organisms living underground phys.org/news/2024-10-undergro

Terrestrial #LandUse signals on groundwater fauna beyond current protection buffers esajournals.onlinelibrary.wile

"land use within a radius of up to 1 kilometer from the #groundwater extraction site has an impact on #amphipods. This could indicate that the current groundwater protection zones are not large enough."
