There’s so much attention on chapter one, yet what about chapter two?
In today’s revising, I’m rehauling chapter two, and realizing I’ve never heard it discussed much at writing conferences etc

I think 90% of novel revising for me is making myself accept that the words can be good but still must be cut if they don’t belong

Apropos of nothing in particular, I've been re-reading (with intent to revise) my manuscript that's basically The Goblin Emperor crossed with Designated Survivor. It's a democracy powered by magic, but the real fantasy is the good governance.
Confusing language usage of the day:
They inched past the …
They passed the …
They past the … WRONG!
Why? Because, English.
Grammar: the subjective mood …
"But if she were an imposter, she certainly had me fooled."
I knew "were" was a correct choice in this phrasing, but I wasn't sure why. Turns out it is called the "subjective mood" and is used in cases where the situation is hypothetical.
Language is interesting. And hard. I can't imagine non-native speakers teasing out that bit of nuance. Or maybe they can. Anyway … there's my bit of grammar research for the day.
When your story, already 4 revisions deep, still shows almost as much red as black. 😥
In the novel I'm revising, Ch 6 ends in a cliffhanger as a spell is cast. It was highly effective; I was going to stop working, but refused after it. However, when I see the MC of the scene again, there is NOTHING about what the hell that spell was about. I didn't attach a note to either scene, nor mention in my todo file. WTF, past me???
"Next book revision time, GO!!!" I scream, and instead submit a short story, write a new bio, make a blog post, go for a walk, make breakfast, stare at a river, go to the bookstore, consider the transient nature of life, update my website, chase a duck!
