This brief highlights a mechanistic advance with implications for understanding neurodegenerative processes and potential avenues for intervention. For mental health professionals, the relevance lies in how shifts in amyloid handling and related neural signaling may relate to cognitive trajectories and mood changes observed in aging populations, informing holistic considerations in assessment and care planning.

Researchers have identified two brain receptors that help the brain clear away amyloid beta, a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease. By stimulating these receptors in mice, scientists increased levels of a natural amyloid-breaking enzyme, reduced buildup in the brain, and improved memory-related behavior. Because these receptors are common drug targets, the findings could open the door to affordable pill-based treatments with fewer side effects.

Notable for mental health professionals, including psychotherapists, counselors, and social workers, the article highlights two key points: (1) neurons actively respond to amyloid beta and inflammatory cues via a shared receptor, triggering synapse loss; (2) targeting this receptor could offer protective strategies for memory beyond current amyloid-focused therapies.

News in #Alzheimer's diagnosis!
#FDA cleared the Lumipulse G pTau217/ß-Amyloid 1-42 Plasma Ratio, a blood test that aids in detecting #amyloid plaques associated with Alzheimer's.
➡️ Less invasive & reduces reliance on PET scans and increases accessibility.
The test measures two proteins in blood plasma and calculates their ratio, correlating to the presence or absence of amyloid plaques.
Has a high accuracy rate ➡️ offers hope for earlier and easier diagnosis.

Experimenting with stain on webs to see if it successfully bonds to the beta chain / like components. I've applied the stain and naturally under 460nm webs fluoresce the expected green. I'm waiting for the sample to completely dry before differentiating with alcohol and then using a water based mount to finally disassociate the unbounded stain from the webs and other artefacts. All being so, we might be left with ThT stained

I love how the abstract puts a reverse spin on the results. They conclude that cognitive decline does not predict amyloid deposition. For me the data is really telling us in no uncertain terms that amyloid does not drive cognitive decline. Did I miss something?

Did a new Alzheimer's drug keep this patient's brain healthier for longer?

New drugs Leqembi and Kisunla may have a modest benefit, don't cure #Alzheimer's, have a host of side effects (including brain bleeds), are troublesome to use (require IV infusion or injection) and multiple brain scans and cost 10's of thousands to administer.

"I think it helped," says her husband, Ken Bell. "But I'm not sure."

That sort of uncertainty is common when it comes to #Leqembi and #Kisunla

Both drugs clear the brain of a substance called beta-#amyloid, which forms the sticky plaques associated with #Alzheimers.

@urlyman If we can keep our mindsets, and hence perhaps our actual brain tissues bioplastic as we age, then I posit this can become self sustaining: we can learn new thought-routes around those extraneous plastic roadblocks in our head, perhaps even those #amyloid ones. Like the internet, the fediverse, rather than the old ROM-like filling with only one bus-route many are offered during their easy-learn youth.
