My new (old) camera.
After hunting around for quite a while now, I have acquired this Canon AE-1 35mm film camera with a 50mm f1.4 lens.
These cameras were manufactured between 1976 and 1984, and I was lucky enough to get this one in excellent condition.
A fact made quasi-astounding when you see the state of the case it arrived in (below).
I’m just waiting for a new battery to arrive (the E in AE stands for electronic – it was one of the first cameras with electronic exposure wizardry), and fingers crossed the old girl will fire up just like it’s 1980 again.
Make no mistake, film photography makes no sense. The film stock is expensive, as is the developing cost, you can’t see the photo you just took for ages….and at the end of the whole process you have a digital photo anyway.
But it’s a thing.
And I’m excited to explore the nonsensical-ness of it all.
Back to the future with film.
My new camera.

Port Macquarie. 1976.
I'm sure lots of #photographers out there use #darktable what do people think? Can you get the results you want? Do you have a favourite workflow? I used #sigmoid to process this #photo but i normally use #filmic I also used #ColorLookUpTable to apply #FujiVelviaEmulation It gives it a very #analogue feel, but sometimes when you look at things too long it becomes really hard to tell what is too much. I think I quite like it, but maybe tomorrow I'll be less sure.
My sister and I.
Here are a couple of photos of my sister (below) and I. Unsure of the dates, maybe sometime in the mid-seventies.
Going back through these slides it becomes evident that I was always a bit of a ham for the camera. While my sister has always been more chill.
Hmmmm. It is possible that this was a fluke shot of me getting squirted in the face (because I am also a clumsy clot), but more than likely I deliberately stuck my face in the water fountain (or bubbler as we used to call it)….for the likes.
Project Re-Xpose.
I’m re-scanning my dad’s old 35mm slides. Many have not seen light for over 30 years.
I have a vague memory that the photo of me was taken at the Botanical Gardens here in Canberra. The photo of my sis…I have no idea.
I think my quest for a 35mm camera is over.
A friend texted to let me know he had found his old Canon AE-1 whilst unpacking some old boxes.
He doesn’t know if it is working (flat bat) but it looks in good cond. Incl 50mm lens.
Asked me if I wanted it.
Sprained my finger whilst simultaneously answering YES and ordering battery and some 35mm film on amazon.
