I shall enjoy the North's Revenge if it happens...

After an abortive attempt at challenging Starmer’s approach earlier this
autumn, the Greater Manchester mayor, Andy Burnham, is still believed to
have leadership ambitions. Starmer’s former deputy, Rayner, has often been
tipped as a successor but may opt to be kingmaker instead.

I abhor the English autumnal habit of burning effigies of humans. The barbaric 16th/17th century English fetish for religious burning of live humans should be be mourned & repented, not celebrated.

But some effigies are interesting. In #Kent, the #Edenbridge Bonfire Society's effigy of #KeirStarmer is notably comprehensive in its critique of the staggeringly unpopular #UKPrimeMinister. #Starmer was chosen by a vote, beating #AngelaRayner ex-#PrinceAndrew to #immolation.

"Won't anybody think of the landlords and the upper middle class people with complicated financial arrangements"

Shago 09.48 GMT

Robert Peston, ITV’s political editor, says he thinks it is a mistake for the
Conservatives to be saying Rachel Reeves should have to resign over the
rental licence error. He explains why in a post on social media. Here is an
extract.

44 Kemi Badenoch’s call for Starmer to sack Reeves, for failing to register her
family home when she rented it on moving to Downing Street, lowers the bar
quite significantly for sackable offences by ministers. I am not certain all her
shadow cabinet colleagues will thank her.

The point is that there is a clear distinction between Rayners failure to take
stamp duty advice and Reeves’s failure to register her home with the council for
rent.

In the case of Rayner, there was the potential for very large personal material
gain. Her dismissal was inevitable ...

Badenoch is apparently saying that almost all cock ups in a minister’s personal
life should disqualify them from holding public office.

Would that stipulation really give the British people the public servants they
deserve, or perhaps simply deter anyone with common sense from going into
politics?

You lads threw Angela Rayner to the wolves over something like this, you're going to have to do the same to Reeves unless you want people to think you're inconsistent and classist?

No 10 refuses to say it has seen evidence
to show Reeves did not break
ministerial code

Is this not the sort of mistake that Angela Rayner lost her job for? Ah, but then Angela didn't go to the RIGHT schools, so...

A spokesperson said the chancellor had used a letting agency to manage the
process, and that while she should have been aware of the obligation to buy
the licence, she had not been advised that she needed one.

“She had not been made aware of the licensing requirement, but as soon as it
was brought to her attention she took immediate action and has applied for
the licence” Reeves’s spokesperson said.

I’m not saying that #RachelReeves should have been sacked but the story seems to me to be very similar to that about #AngelaRayner which resulted in her having to resign.
It makes me wonder if #KeirStarmer was rather more keen to get of one of them than the other.

Angela Rayner Resigns After Tax Error, Calls for Change in Labour

Angela Rayner, former Deputy Prime Minister, delivered her resignation speech in the House of Commons after admitting to underpaying stamp duty on her East Sussex flat. The resignation came after the Prime Minister's ethics adviser found that Rayner failed to seek proper tax advice, leading to a £40... [More info]

Wes Streeting urges Angela Rayner's return and criticizes Nigel Farage at Labour conference

Yeah, the stamp duty excuse feels like a cover story. Rayner clashing with Starmer over NHS policy makes more sense, since he’s cozying up to privatization. They’ll spin it differently, but turf wars inside Labour are always about power, not unpaid taxes.

Wes Streeting urges Angela Rayner's return and criticizes Nigel Farage at Labour conference

Totally agree, it’s more PR stunts than substance. Labour love to parade care work reforms, but on the ground nothing shifts for underpaid, overworked staff. Workers deserve structural change, not recycled promises dressed up as progress.

Wes Streeting praises Angela Rayner and urges her return to Labour leadership

Fair point, but let’s not pretend Labour’s drama is just policy debates. Rayner’s exit screams deeper fractures—voters sniff weakness quick, and that trust gap won’t close with spin alone.
