2 bees sit on a mauve, lavender-like flower head. On the left is the larger one of the 2, all yellow and brown stripes, with quite a long abdomen. On the right is a slightly smaller bee, with yellow thorax, with a broad rusty brown band across the abdomen, surrounded by yellow, and with a black tip.

Great start for a garden wildlife weekend: Ruby-throated hummingbird visiting my anise hyssop. It also visited the great blue lobelia.

A hummingbird dominates the center of the photo. The front (chin, neck, breast) is all white, and the back (head, back) are metallic green. The wings are blurred. It is feeding from a mauve and white, tall cluster of tiny flowers that look a bit like lavender. The background is blurry green.

My Anise Hyssop (Agastache foeniculum) is in full bloom.

A number of purple flowers, a lot like lavender, rise on stalks above a see of green.

Mostly rudbeckia hirta with the anise hyssop, purple coneflower, and bergamot bee balm around it. The rudbeckia was planted in exactly one fifth of the circular bed.

A photo nearly full of various flowers. In the foreground is a mass of rudbeckia hirta that are yellow mixed with some anise hyssop that is light purple-ish towards the left and a few purple coneflowers behind the hyssop that are pink. Tall and behind the rudbeckia are bergamot bee balm which is a pink or light lavender color. In the upper right are some hanging planters with mostly petunias, and in the upper left there are a few hollyhock flowers barely visible.

I grew this Anise Hyssop (#Agastache foeniculum) from seed. It was fairly tame the first two years, but it really took over this summer. In fact, it has crowded out a significant chunk of the Wild Bergamot! It is drought-tolerant (I haven’t watered it since the first year - low maintenance! 😁) and it attracts tons of pollinators.

I saw a bee on the hyssop, the rudbeckia is almost open, the purple coneflower stems are longer and the heads spikier, also a too many weird spots ladybug on the hyssop.

A small Agastache foeniculum Anise Hyssop flower with a asian ladybug on a leaf to the right. The flower has many pointy tip petals in a spike of sorts that isn't very big yet. It is a bright lavender color.A rudbeckia hirta flower that the petals are just starting to unfurl and the brown center is visible. The little not-leaf things around the flower are fuzzy. The petals are yellow.
An echinacea purpurea purple coneflower blossom that is still green and spiky but the stem is growing longer. The not-leaf parts around the flower are dark green, and the rim of the spiky part is light green and larger and the center is an in between green and small and spiky and dense.A larger, or taller, flower of the Agastache foeniculum Anise Hyssop. This is where I saw the bee but it is not in the image.

Anise hyssop is starting to bloom

A small purple pine one looking flower emerging from green leaves.

Two of the anise hyssops that were planted a day apart. First with frost damage, second without. It seems the older leaves were most susceptible to the frost but they were likely to die off anyway. There are green shoots on some of the browned leaf ones so I don't think any are actually killed off.

It was 2F degrees difference from one morning till the next and both there was frost.

A closeup photo of a anise hyssop plant that has some brown leaves from getting killed by frost. There are other leaves that are still green and fine. These were planted on March 28.A closeup photo of anise hyssop, it is green without any brown leaves. It was planted on March 29 and the low the next day was 2F warmer.

Went back to previous thought on planting hyssop and cut holes with the bulb planter and put cardboard around them. I guess it will be an experiment to see if they do different than the trenched ones. 12 more in the ground! 28 to go.

I need to put sticks by them, which I see I forgot to do. I'm sure the chickens aren't taste testing them or trying to scratch in the hole. They'd never do that.

A photo of 12 more cells of Agastache foeniculum planted. This time they were put in holes cut with a bulb planter and have had cardboard put around them that has a hole cut into it for each cell. The bulb planter is laying in the leaves and grass to the left of the plantings along with an 18 volt bosch cordlerss drill with a hole saw in it. Beyond and above the row is a single apple tree seedling that has a plastic mouse guard on it and a metal stake driven next to it. Cardboard has been placed around it too, which slows down the grass from growing for a while.

This tray of anise hyssop is growing too fast.

A tray of Anise Hyssop, Agastache foeniculum. There are 48 cells with multiple plants in each, the tallest are around 2 inches / 5cm.
