Why tetracycline should not be taken with antacids, milk and iron?

Milk and other dairy products, antacids containing polyvalent cations, and various iron salts form complexes with tetracycline derivatives, making them insoluble and poorly absorbable. This interaction can reduce the absorption of tetracyclines by 50 to 90%, or even more.

#Japan launched a national plan to reduce #AntimicrobialResistance in 2016.

Data from 2012 to 2020 show a pretty clear, abrupt, and consistent reduction in overall and inappropriate #antibiotic #prescription corresponding to the launch.

"Between 2012 and 2020, the oral antibiotic prescription rate decreased by 54%. The prescription rate showed a significant downward trend post-intervention (additional annual reduction in incidence rate ratio, 0.889; 95% confidence interval, 0.889–0.990). However, broad-spectrum antibiotics (third-generation cephalosporins, macrolides and fluoroquinolones) remained prevalent, comprising 84.7% and 71.4% of prescriptions in 2012 and 2020, respectively. Antibiotic prescriptions during outpatient visits for pharyngitis, sinusitis, bronchitis and viral upper respiratory infections decreased significantly (rate ratios = 0.66, 0.76, 0.51 and 0.49, respectively). The antibiotic prescription rate was ∼2.5-fold higher in individuals with HIV than in those without."

Researchers from #Germany have isolated a novel #antibiotic named saarvienin A. The glycopeptide was obtained from an Amycolatopsis strain by Rolf Müller and his team and was described in the journal Angewandte Chemie. With a completely novel structure, it exhibits excellent antibiotic activity against Gram-positive bacteria and can overcome vancomycin resistance. However, cytotoxicity against eukaryotic cells has also been observed.

Apparently the #antimicrobialResistance community found #Buzzfeed.

Nearly 25% of this list about "#Health 'Lies'" is #AMR ranting. 🤣

6. "an #antibiotic and WILL NOT cure your cold. Colds are viruses. ...a mild cough, congestion, and sore throat DOES NOT require a doctor...."

Article title: "13 Health "Lies" People Still Believe (But Really Shouldn't), According To Doctors And Nurses"

Author "Liz Richardson" (BuzzFeed Staff)6. "Azithromycin ('Zpak' or Zithromax) is an antibiotic and WILL NOT cure your cold. Colds are viruses. No, you don't have a sinus infection after two days of congestion. Please, please inform the country of 18–35 year-olds that a mild cough, congestion, and sore throat DOES NOT require a doctor visit. STOP IT.
"Ask any urgent care provider what their most common patient is, and they'll all tell you URI (upper respiratory illness/infection), which is 99.99% of the time viral and will usually resolve on its own!!! [Unless symptoms worsen or do not improve], STOP, STOP, STOP going to urgent cares and especially ERs for colds!!!!!"

PHORCE allows measurement of lytic #phage amplification rates in bacterial populations. This study uses PHORCE to reveal phenotypic diversity among #Ecoli & #Paeruginosa phages; phage- #antibiotic interactions are mainly determined by the drug @PLOSBiology plos.io/3G2myhf

A mathematical model of phage infection allows the extraction of key phage amplification parameters (PHORCE). Top and middle: E. coli growth curves measured by bioluminescence in the presence of the phage Bas04 at all combinations of eight different initial bacterial concentrations (1.1 × 104–1.4 × 106 mL−1, orange to blue) and 10 different initial phage concentrations (2.5 × 103–1.3 × 106 mL−1, light to dark). Bottom left: Schematic of minimal model of phage amplification. Bottom right: Comparison of observed collapse times and collapse times from the model.

The last time a new class of antibiotics reached the market was nearly three decades ago—but that could soon change, thanks to a discovery by researchers at McMaster University.

New #antibiotic that kills #drugresistant #bacteria discovered in technician’s #garden
It targets bacteria’s protein-making factory, the #ribosome, in a way that other antibiotic drugs don’t. Ribosome is an attractive antibiotic target because bacteria don’t easily develop resistance to #drugs targeting the structure. In studies, #lariocidin slowed the growth of a range of common bacterial #pathogens, including many multidrug-resistant strains.
