Block – Lead Me Not Into Penn Station

Anti-folk is one of those music genres that has remained largely unchanged since its inception decades ago. It seems that artists interested in this style are often leaning towards an already proven formula, or they vividly and overly mimic their influences, trying to reinvent the same old wheel over and over again. Thankfully, there are singer-songwriters like Block who always deliver fresh, unique, innovative, memorable music to the table. With “Lead Me Not Into Penn Station,” his recently re-released material, he breaks the rules, shapeshifts the boundaries, and proves that anti-folk can be more than just a plain old subgenre of folk music. “Lead Me Not Into Penn Station” is the fourth re-release on Meridian, consisting of ten incredible songs that will immediately wrap around your listening apparatus, grab you by the collar, and transport you to an entirely different realm. Written and recorded in the first period right after he moved from Chapel Hill to the East Village of New York City, Block found new inspiration for this material, and that’s vividly hearable. The songs are more complex, with his brilliant ideas and outstanding orchestrations shining during each segment of every song. For those stumbling upon his music for the first time, Block combines a singer-songwriter approach with various techniques and many different but complementary music genres, crafting a luxuriant sonic imagery that will not only suit the anti-folk fans but also anyone who appreciates cleverly assembled and flawlessly performed music. “Lead Me Not Into Penn Station” exemplifies his dedication to the mentioned experimentation. Perhaps his music dominantly leans towards singer-songwriter and anti-folk aesthetics, but you’ll also stumble upon some of the finest properties borrowed from alternative, folk-punk, folk rock, alt-folk, indie folk, indie rock, etc. Block carefully, thoughtfully, and wisely incorporated all these elements into his songs, so they serve as more than necessary enhancements, accentuations, decorations, and other details that more or less define the ambiance. Still, Block remains loyal to the primary sonic direction, leaving enough space for anti-folk purists to solely enjoy in all those classic sonic maneuvers that define this long-loved music genre. “Lead Me Not Into Penn Station” definitely showcases his profound love for alternative and indie rock music, but he uses these two particular styles moderately and wisely, elevating particular segments or entire songs to new heights. Therefore, experimentations with various approaches, different techniques, and many complementary styles resulted in one of the finest pieces in anti-folk history, suitable for anyone who appreciates a brilliant, one-of-a-kind approach to anti-folk sound.

“Lead Me Not Into Penn Station” is packed with many excellent songs. “Rhinoceros,” a perfect opening composition that seamlessly blends the finest elements of alternative rock and anti-folk aesthetics, immediately showcases what you might expect from the remainder of the album. The carefully assembled interplay between acoustic and electric guitars serves as a perfect backdrop for all vocals to shine upon, while the dynamic rhythm section offers warmth, groove, depth, and pace. “Future Comes Too Fast” blends an entire collection of elements borrowed from country, Americana, anti-folk, and other similar styles. Compared to the opening tune, it’s a more stripped-down anti-folk song, yet it carries another barrage of excellent guitar riffs delivered on electric guitar. This blend of clean, polished acoustic sounds and more raw, unfiltered, gritty, distorted sounds delivered with electric guitar constructs a lush ambiance that will immediately grab your attention. “Hard” once again merges anti-folk with garage and alternative in such a distinctive way. It resembles of all those alternative rock hits, recorded during the nineties, yet Block incorporated more than enough anti-folk maneuvers, making this track such a unique listening experience worth repeating over and over again. “Reuben Says” is another standout on this album, a song that leans more towards alternative, indie, and grunge sound. With its deep lyricism, psychedelic chord progressions, intricate basslines, and well-accentuated rhythmic patterns, Block dives deeper into experimentation yet somehow remains loyal to the primary sonic direction. Block also showcases his songwriting, composing, arranging, and producing abilities with “She Is…,” a song that could easily spin on MTV back in the day. It carries all those qualities that make an alternative song a potential radio hit, yet it stays subtly in an anti-folk lane. “To Alice From Thunderland” is another stripped-down acoustic anti-folk ballad that carries a hypnotic, addictive, irresistible chord progression that immediately grabs you by the collar and leads on an epic voyage through an expansive sonic universe. It perfectly melts into a “Folk Song ’96,” a self-explanatory composition that flawlessly showcases what folk rock music sounded like back in the nineties. Block’s profoundly soulful, passionate, sincere, confident, emotive, and powerful vocal performance expertly suits those magnificent guitar works, while the additional sonic maneuvers delivered in the background craft a perfect ambiance that complements Block’s voice. “Street Gig” brings back a rock-solid rhythm section in the equation, with all those tastefully assembled beats, breaks, fills, and other percussive acrobatics working in cohesion with a comprehensive collection of rich, deep, dense, heavy basslines and lush palm-muted guitars. Block suddenly let them all ring harmoniously, creating a tension and release throughout the entire track with such precision and finesse. “Mating Dance Blues” is another catchy anti-folk song that announces the closure with its memorable chord progressions and Block’s soulful vocal performance. It prepares the listener for “Black,” a perfect closure that pretty much sums up everything Block intended to achieve with this material. It’s one of those songs that immediately forces you to spin this fascinating album over again.

“Lead Me Not Into Penn Station” is an alternative rock-soaked anti-folk masterpiece, an album that carries so many memorable moments worth revisiting over and over again. It vividly showcases Block’s tremendous experience, knowledge, talent, and skill, distilled into brilliant ideas and marvelous musicianship, showcased through ten incredible compositions that instantly tackle your senses. If you’re looking for soulful, passionate, sincere anti-folk music performed straight from the heart, “Lead Me Not Into Penn Station” will be right up your alley.
