It's how impossible it is to get

Want a bigger, better globe artichoke harvest next year? Limit each plant to 4โ€“6 flowers to prevent exhaustion. In April, mulch with well-rotted compost to boost growth and keep plants strong for next season. A little restraint now means a bounty later! #gardening #artichokes

Today I prepared artichokes for the first time. I trimmed the stems and sawed off the top inch and a half so that they could fit in my steamer basket. I might have cooked them for too long, as they were very much ready by the time I checked them around 50 minutes. It was a nice hanging out experience to slowly eat them while chatting, like doing crabs, I suppose. They are also shockingly lovely inside. They're thistles, who knew?!

A steamed artichoke with its outer petals all removed sits on a cutting board with a knife, near some of the outer detritus. The very inner petals are folded out, so you can see a little bit of the inside of the flower, the "choke" part. It very much looks like a flower now, not a standard idea of a vegetable. Rather than be olive green like the outer petals, the inner petals are white-gray with a hint of purple. It's quite lovely.

I have 6 whole artichokes and no idea what to do with them. I am open to suggestions.

Today's produce rescue was mostly tomatoes and citrus. Those I can handle.

A #Batman #tvseries style shot of the #Roselle pots with the #artichokes behind them.

The tiny little Roselle was in the same lot of seedlings as the rest!

The Roselle seedling I grew from seed is larger than it is.

It seems to have root problems. When itโ€™s been repotted it has only a tiny ball of roots each time.

Iโ€™ve given it up for dead several times. ๐Ÿค•

Itโ€™s in the same potting mix as the othersโ€ฆ ? Advice anyone?

Back for my personal pick for an artichoke recipe. Going to make homemade ~ Does that sound yummy to you? It definitely does to Me!

Many steps, but it seems doable. I๐Ÿ’šthat flavorful leeks are included along w/potatoes to help thicken the soup; heavy cream is used, but just not as much since potatoes are in the mix.

โœ”the recipe & Give it a tryโฃ

In honor of Monday's inauguration I've been making cocktails.

Specifically the "Lite Treason" (by Beau Burtnick @ Kask , Portland Oregon).

Modified White Russian (vodka, coffee liqueur, Cynar) under sweetened Mezcal hand whipped cream.

A good drink for a bad day.

It's time to choose a cooking method; my research leaves me w/ as the top pick. U can also bake them, but steaming keeps them moist whereas baking may dry them out. OVER-steaming may result in mushy ones though! Many ways to place them inside the pot. โœ…out images๐Ÿ‘‡ to see what appeals to U.
To enhance flavor, U may cut up some lemons/add whole garlic cloves to water.

HELLO๐Ÿ‘‹ Back again 4 a continuation of posts on

This๐Ÿ‘‡ is a very helpful/instructional image to me and hopefully to U as well: What parts of an artichoke that Can/Cannot be eaten. I'm amazed at how much of an artichoke is INedible, but what CAN be savored is So Delicious ~ if you've ever eaten them beforeโฃ

I've got a few more ideas to post about artichokes and Look forward to seeing U soon.

An image of a real artichoke sliced in half, showing what parts of the inside of it are edible and inedible. Most of it is actually inedible, but what is called it's heart (the lowest portion of it, extending downward and into it's stem) is edible; the flesh on the bottom of the leaves are ok to eat as well.

An informative image of how to pick an artichoke ... the Good and the Bad. As for the GOOD points: tight, compact leaves are a plus and discolored leaves are normal - artichokes like these are ripe, ready for use. The BAD points: loose leaves and an opening hole in center; split or shriveled leaves - Avoid purchasing artichokes like these.
