Tried running BashCore live USB on an old Acer Aspire One D160 (2009) as a minimal home server (VPS-style).
Everything worked… until the Atheros Wi-Fi chip (ath9k) crashed the system in a loop.
Not BashCore’s fault — just unreliable legacy hardware.
Blacklisting the driver solved it. 👊

BashCore proves itself again:
💡 Lightweight
⚙️ Transparent
💻 Runs even on decade-old machines.

@mjg59 on the other hand #hostapd or #ath9k / #ath10k / #ath11k / #ath12k / #mt76 /... in the wireless ecosystem are huge projects and use #copyfree licenses like #BSD or #ISC. Where the goal is to allow creating forks for commercial, closed-source products with extra, wifi related features. This motive and use-case for #copyfree is what I see more as a threat to #copyleft than using #copyfree in a new coreutils suite.

If anyone has run into issues with the Atheros device drivers preventing their system from suspending correctly I'd be interested to hear about it.

In my case it's a negatively unbalanced coin toss as to whether the system will actually suspend cleanly. It more often attempts to suspend about three times (I hear disks spinning down and up) then drops back to the lock screen.

The journal always points to the device driver completely losing its mind.

Does anyone know a reliable place (preferably in the EU) that I can buy an Atheros QCNFA222 wifi card? I bought one off Amazon, but it was a dud (and is being returned)?

@AChillElephant If you use network-manager with #ath9k, it may disconnect you sometimes and then reconnect by itself. It's a strange problem and totally unacceptable for serious work.

The problem is in network-manager. So you should disable network-manager service and use wicd for connecting to wifi to fix this.

Other solutions (like ConnMan, wpa_supplicant) may work, but I haven't tried it.

Finally get rid of this proprietary junk :rms: . I have struggle a bit with another WiFi card (returned to amazon, they send me the wrong reference). I replaced it with a third one, a QCA9565 chip that work out of the box with the ath9k free as in freedom driver. :fsf:
