Repeating this advice: if you used your generator last week to keep power to your house in Southern California, it most likely needs an oil change. Do it before Monday. They need an oil change every 100 hours. 5w30 or 10w30 depending on your model, usually. #generators #backuppower #PSPS #poweroutages

I recently found that many cheap AC chargers for LiFePO4 batteries don't actually trickle or float charge, even if the product listing says they do. They charge the battery to full and then shut themselves off. They must be power cycled to restart charging.

So the instrument attached to the battery (with charger connected) ran until the battery was discharged, then shut down and lost data. This is a scientific instrument in the basement that requires 12VDC even through power outages, and after the last lead acid battery died I switched to LiFePO4.

My tentative solution is to put the charger on a 7-day timer, and once or twice a week turn it on for a few hours.

What I haven't figured out is how to charge batteries with the generator - UPS, phone + power packs, ebook, and radios. The phone is barely ok - it'll get maybe a 60% charge in 40 minutes. The power packs and ebook I haven't watched as closely, but they seem to take 2+ hours for a full charge, and the radios I'm guessing are similar. The UPS is tough, it needs 8-12 hours to charge to keep stuff running for maybe 3 hours.

I guess all those numbers can add up, but its a lot of active management every time I fire up the generator. Maybe I need to invest in a larger battery power station and a solar charger that can keep it topped off, so I can charge the other stuff whenever.

All the recent weather disasters have me thinking about my own backup plan. I have a small generator that can run the fridge for a few days (generator specs say 7 hours runtime on a gallon of gas, which seems optimistic to me, but even at 4 hours runtime per gallon that's about a day.) We have solar lamps that run I think about 6 hours on a charge (TBH I've never run them down), and ample candles. (which double as romantic atmosphere. If the world is ending, may as well be with someone you love.)

I was seriously interested in the #FordLightning to use for emergency backup power for my house but the cost of the truck plus the cost of installing the bi-directional power inverter was still WAY too expensive for me to consider purchasing. ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

Random question (ANSWERED!) for the misc. computer/electronics folks hanging out here. Has anyone tried replacing their UPS batteries (12V SLA/AGM) with the equivalent LiFePO4 replacements? (probably a reliable brand, like Bienno). Different charge points, but (in theory) the BMS in the batteries should not care? (UPDATE: Agreement was that you need a LiFePO4 compatible charger, and this will not work as a drop in solution, unless a battery has been designed as a drop in -- which the ones I had been looking at are NOT. Thanks everyone!) #batteries #LiFEPO4 #backuppower #electronics

@u0421793 I realised that I needed a solar power source for the house in case of a power cut. The equipment (Power supply & panel) is actually for that but inherently just there as a backup not doing much. I realised that it is pointless having a solar node but no power to charge the phone interface to use the node. Emergency communication system needs power for the interface devices, & that is a tougher requirement, hence the OTT kit. #meshtastic #BackupPower #balkonkraftwerk

And.. after three hours of using my truck to power the house, it's now time to charge the truck back up from mains - and also to charge my colleague's EV.

I think we might be pulling a lot of power from the grid.

Side note: As @TechConnectify showcased when doing a weekend "power the home" experiment, EV battery packs are MASSIVE and can run a 'normal' home for days without an issue.

My home is not a normal home, because we have a sever room that runs while I'm at work, and we also have a fairly large house (and it was cold last night). We rely on electricity for all our heating and power.

To give you an idea of how much more power we use, our sever room in a single day can consume about 40 kWh of power alone. So yeah, we consume more than normal people do.

My Truck's battery went from 95% to about 75% in three hours, but that was with literally everything powered on that we'd normally use for an average morning. If we had an actual power cut, we'd be using FAR LESS than we did.

Our Home Assistant power flow diagram showing that weโ€™re charging our Truck (Adira Tap) back up after three hours off-grid (to help our out local utility). Additional power drains from heating and charging my colleagueโ€™s EV up at the same time.
2023-07-20

Our local utility company are doing one of their "peak" events where you can earn up to $1 per kWh you don't use compared to your regular use during a given period.

It took me about 35 minutes, but I finally convinced the F150 Lightning and Home Integration System to talk, which means 98% of my power is coming from the truck tonight ;)

And that means prizes... I mean $$$ #ElectricVehicles #BackupPower #F150Lightning

I am looking for a switch or relay to switch on command a mains AC power from mains to a battery-based backup AC power output. The switch should be able to be controlled/commanded from a raspberry pi or similar. The application is to switch the power to a large freezer and/or 500W dehumidifier on command from app in pi. No need for continuous power supply. Any suggestions very gratefully received. #relay #switch #AC #backupPower #UPS #electronics #maker #raspberrypi #uninterruptiblePowerSupply

1. Platelet (blood) donation went well yesterday and I got a chair with a huge TV. For those that donโ€™t know, platelets, unlike whole blood donation, take about 1.5 hours to extract which means you can watch an entire guilt-free movie while helping others.

2. Backup power project for the house moved forward and should be done by the end of the weekend.

3. My wife made a delicious, hearty minestrone soup that lasted two nights.
