#FotoVorschlag: Federleicht // Light as a feather

My #chickens are a lot lighter now, as they're losing so many #feathers. They're in the middle of #moulting and especially the two older #hens look a bit scruffy (their feathers are growing back nicely though, as you can see). There's also rain and wind and as of today, they have to stay cooped up due to avian flu. Apologies for the pity party, I just wanted to ... shed some light on the daily struggles of our feathery friends. 😋

One morning 2 or 3 chicks made their way through the wire mesh and out of the cage and were out on their own. Lucky no cats were about. The hen was all anxious and pacing inside, probably disturbing her 2 peer hens in there brooding eggs. After a busy day it's easy to forget about adjusting the mesh overlaps so the chicks can't fit through the holes. You're just glad you remembered to close up the cages at all.. Eventually some sort of more sage-like system will have to come about, like a dog that can be trusted not to eat the chicks, or a nested fencing situation.

Now that I think of it, the egg-farmer that put his dog in the chicken cages at night probably only did it for big cages with 80 adult birds. I'll have to ask him. If Maron gets knocked up I'll have to be intensive about having the puppies hanging out with chicks a lot.. Maybe I can still train Maron to live with chicks??

It's getting chilly around here, so the chicken run will be serving a dual purpose as a greenhouse. I planted two valencia orange trees to make use of the chicken fertilizer. #backyardchickens 🌱 #permaculture #silvopasture #agroforestry #compost #fruit #fruittrees #homegrown #eggs #forest #trees

We had a chicken disappear on us for a few weeks. We found her again yesterday morning with a few new additions.

7 chicks hatched in the wild.

Last Day Chicks.. well one of the 10 is still around.
I had to adjust things for the newly broody hen and the hen with the Jidori Rooster chick so I rushed 5 of the 6-group over to a friends' place. The 6 couldn't jam into the small pace with the JidoriChick's hen was so one was up high in the middle of the yard on a plastic planter, one was at the entrance in the rain and one was jammed between the brooding box and a big garden rock. The garden rock bird was suprisingly active in the dark rain and jumped away, ended up on the other side of the yard in an apple box I could close up with dollar (100 yen shop) wire mesh stuff. He's luck because the four chicks in the box next to him disappeared. I think a weasel wormed in from the back between some wired mesh and the box.. Maybe if I had left the baby rooster uncaged the weasel would have been content with just him and I'd sill have 4 chicks to give away on Sunday? Probably not.. The rooster chick would be gone, I still wouldn't have notices the weasel entrance to the 4 chicks and just would have lost more birds.. Glad I didn't leave the other 5 chicks out on their own.. Ah well.. It's sad but every once in a while we have to give back to the local ecology I guess. It must have been a wild weasel and not a feral cat, so that's good, I guess. But why can't they just take one, why does it have to be all 4 or all 15!?!?

Chicken experts, what does it mean when an Australorp makes a kind of honking sneeze noise? It seriously sounds like a short parp from a party toy, but she's done it a few times while I've heard. She seems entirely happy otherwise, albeit somewhat mulberry-stained so I'm not sure of her comb colour.

Should I be concerned?

Here is an excellent 5-minute video about why you should raise your own chickens, only buy 100% organic pasture-raised, or not eat them at all.

This morning's egg haul. #BackyardChickens

Morning sun shines on five chicken eggs held by a white person's hand. The eggs are varying shades of brown and one blueish white. They also vary in size and have not yet been washed.

One result of having #backyardChickens is - you can’t ever again order eggs when you go out for breakfast because once you get used to fresh eggs from well fed chickens, nothing else will do.

I thought this hen was a goner last night for sure (she is 10, which is as old as old chickens get) but she hopped down from her roost this morning and faceplanted in her corn. congrats on seizing another day, Rocket.

the most ancient gold-laced wyandotte you've ever seen, going grey at the edges of her comb and wattles. she's also molting which doesn't decrease her overall level of decrepitude

#chickens #backyardchickens #ducks Turns out raw beans of any kind, including green beans, are deadly poison for chickens and ducks. Soak for five hours in cold water. Rinse well. BOIL for at least half an hour. Cool. Chop.

Cleaned, dusted and organized the henhouse/garden shed, reclaiming the garden shed part. I hung plastic sheeting to reduce the effects of the hens' enthusiastic dirt transport habits. (They like to bathe in dust, then they go somewhere else - like the henhouse - and shake it off. Fun!)

The chickens are really enjoying spring. The lawn has gone to seed so I let them have at it a couple of times a week.

I'm going to mow the lawn one day. But not today.

An older hen with a prominent red comb pecks at a younger hen, which is suspended mid-air in surprise. The younger hen’s outstretched foot, showing five toes, is clearly visible. Both hens have pale cream and white plumage and are outdoors on a patch of grassy ground, surrounded by green grass and scattered leaves in a natural garden setting.
