Here's what you need to know if you're thinking about getting backyard chickens for eggs or meat. #backyardchickens

It's getting chilly around here, so the chicken run will be serving a dual purpose as a greenhouse. I planted two valencia orange trees to make use of the chicken fertilizer. #backyardchickens 🌱 #permaculture #silvopasture #agroforestry #compost #fruit #fruittrees #homegrown #eggs #forest #trees
We had a chicken disappear on us for a few weeks. We found her again yesterday morning with a few new additions.
7 chicks hatched in the wild.
Chicken experts, what does it mean when an Australorp makes a kind of honking sneeze noise? It seriously sounds like a short parp from a party toy, but she's done it a few times while I've heard. She seems entirely happy otherwise, albeit somewhat mulberry-stained so I'm not sure of her comb colour.
Should I be concerned?
Here is an excellent 5-minute video about why you should raise your own chickens, only buy 100% organic pasture-raised, or not eat them at all.

This morning's egg haul. #BackyardChickens
One result of having #backyardChickens is - you can’t ever again order eggs when you go out for breakfast because once you get used to fresh eggs from well fed chickens, nothing else will do.
I thought this hen was a goner last night for sure (she is 10, which is as old as old chickens get) but she hopped down from her roost this morning and faceplanted in her corn. congrats on seizing another day, Rocket.

#chickens #backyardchickens #ducks Turns out raw beans of any kind, including green beans, are deadly poison for chickens and ducks. Soak for five hours in cold water. Rinse well. BOIL for at least half an hour. Cool. Chop.
Cleaned, dusted and organized the henhouse/garden shed, reclaiming the garden shed part. I hung plastic sheeting to reduce the effects of the hens' enthusiastic dirt transport habits. (They like to bathe in dust, then they go somewhere else - like the henhouse - and shake it off. Fun!)
The chickens are really enjoying spring. The lawn has gone to seed so I let them have at it a couple of times a week.
I'm going to mow the lawn one day. But not today.
