@toddo I would highly recommend reading more about Black Ballroom culture and other gay/queer subcultures. While their voices are largely missing from the public record, due to racism, some internal resources still document a lot of their history. (Some of which is happening right now). HIGHLY suggest the photographs of Teenie Harris, a Black, Pittsburgh photographer who documented Black urban life at the time, including Ballroom.

Tragically, #VenusPellagattiXtravaganza was #murdered at the age of 23, and her murder remains #unsolved. Despite her untimely #death, her #legacy as a #trans #icon and her #impact on the #BallroomCulture have endured. Efforts have been made to honor her memory, including designating her childhood home in Jersey City as a historic landmark and developing a #documentary about her life.
