Ukraine Prepares to Sign Agreement with Council of Europe on Special Tribunal for Russian Aggression

This was announced by Ukraine’s Deputy Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha. The tribunal will be mandated to hold Russia’s top leadership accountable for the crime of aggression against #Ukraine, in violation of the UN Charter.

Hungary, Serbia, and Turkey voted against the creation of the tribunal.

Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia abstained from the vote. A total of 40 countries voted in favor.

I hoped that the increase of spending could have been used to establish a common European defence force.

I don't expect this to come from the bigger countries (they are big enough to have a functional defence force, so obviously they would spend the money on it), but on smaller countries, that must rely on alliances with others: for example the #Baltics or the #Nordics.

Instead, it seems nothing is coming from there, a lost opportunity.

If #Russia was planning to invade the #Baltics, it would need to take out #Sweden’s military presence on the island of #Gotland first, preventing #NATO member Sweden from reinforcing the Baltics and projecting power outside it’s boundaries from the Island.

Sabotage and hybrid operations against Sweden should hence not be interpreted as attempts to invade Sweden (they only need Gotland), but prodding whether they can pull an invasion of the Baltics out.
