This van was manufactured by VEB Barkas-Werke in Chemnitz, Germany, between 1961 and 1988. The vans were available in a variety of configurations. The particular van is the minibus variety, first produced in 1964. It has been converted into a camper van!
Today, a โtwin under the skinโ of the recently featured Wartburgs - East Germanyโs Barkas B 1000 van, introduced in 1961. With its two-stroke engine and front-wheel drive layout, it shared its Auto Union heritage and many parts with the Wartburg 353. And like the Wartburg, it got a VW four-stroke engine in 1989, although this wasnโt enough to save a space-efficient and once advanced - but by then ancient - design.
