The Epistle of #Barnabas is a very early Christian document.

But we must not assume very early always means very consistent with apostolic preaching and teaching...because the Epistle of Barnabas' views on Judaism are nearly impossible to square with that of Jesus and the Apostles.

In bible times, infants were often named a while after they were born. It gave parents time to name their baby fittingly, based upon their personality/appearance etc.

Also, an adult might be renamed by friends/family to emphasize a particularly endearing quality~

This was true of #Barnabas, formerly known as Joses. His new name translates as: son of #consolation / #encouragement. What a tribute, considering the God of the #bible is called, the God of all comfort.

Thread on #Barnabas, "Son of Encouragement." All we know about him biographically is that his proper name was Joseph, and that he was a Levite from the island of Cyprus who was living in Jerusalem.

He was a man of some means having sold fields and putting the funds at the disposal of the apostles, presumably to help the poor in Jerusalem. Perhaps he was influenced by the story of the rich young ruler who Jesus asked to do the same. (See my previous thread on this: https://deacon.social/@badbede/109626020074302228) 1/x

We know that John Mark, the author of this gospel was close to #Barnabas, who was such a strong advocate for the young man that he broke fellowship with Paul for a while. Later, Paul saw the value of Mark, even asking Timothy to bring this useful man with him (2 Tim 4:11).

Barnabas was also wealthy, or at least had lands that he sold to provide for the poor (Acts 4:37)—exactly what Jesus had asked of the rich young ruler!

Could it be that Barnabas was the rich young man in Mark's gospel? 2/x
