LLANA OF GATHOL (1979)
Acrylic - 24" x 32"

Since I did the eleven Martian Tales books over the course of a year, as time went on some things became less important. This time we did not worry about the title of the book, and Llana herself does not even appear in my painting. 1/4

Two scantily clad Barsoomian men carrying laser pistols are caught by surprise on a polar landscape by a large wooly beast. The creature has a body like a yeti, covered all in white fur, but its lower half is four-legged like a stocky pachyderm. It has large insectile eyes and rhino-like horns protruding from its snout. Two tusks extend from the corners of its mouth, which is open exposing uneven pointed teeth.

SYNTHETIC MEN OF MARS (1979)
Acrylic - 32" x 24"

After experiencing the look of the Plant Men on the second cover of the series, I was hesitant to follow exactly Burroughs' description of the Synthetic Man. 1/3

A grossly disfigured, hulking man ferries a boat through vermillion swamp. He holds an ornate rapier at the ready while pushing the craft with a makeshift pole gripped in his offhand. Gentle ripples in the water—highlighted in pink—radiate from the boat. The synthetic man's black hair and red cast skin are native to Barsoom, but his face is grotesquely asymmetrical with one huge eye bulging. His other eye is barely visibly as his face droops and his mouth slants at a sharp diagonal. His frame is comically top heavy with tense, striated muscle concentrated in his yolked shoulders and broad chest. At the bow of the boat, a Barsoomian woman decked in jewels and not much else is caught in a moment of surprise as she spies monstrous creatures ahead. A green, six-legged lizard with yellow eyes emerges from the water, stretching its jaws to reveal a mouth of jagged fangs. On an uprooted tree nearby perches an enormous insect with pincered mandibles, barbed tail, and translucent fly-like wings

Rule of Cool - this game would explore a world that’s imaginative and unpredictable, yet tonally consistent. Things wouldn’t have to make sense logically, only stylistically. Hence “the rule of cool”. A good example of that would be Alex Raymond’s #FlashGordon comic book or its 1980s movie adaptation. #barsoom novels by E. R. Burroughs or #StarWars movies are also great examples. 2/?

Dumb question. I really enjoyed A Princess of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs as a boy and occasionally as an adult. When Disney released John Carter I thought it was a perfectly serviceable modern interpretation of something well over 100 years old..so why all the hate? I really don't know what people were expecting and not getting..

A FIGHTING MAN OF MARS (1979)
Acrylic - 24" x 32"

Since I was endeavoring to be the illustrator most faithful to Burroughs' descriptions, Lester del Rey and I had a lengthy discussion about whether the white lizard I wanted to show had six or eight legs. 1/4

#sciencefiction #scifi #scifiart #sff #edgarriceburroughs #johncarter #barsoom

Menacingly, a white, six-legged lizard grips pale rocks rising well above the floor in an expansive cavern. Distant stalactites extend from the ceiling washed in dark pink and purple providing contrast. The lizard perches above twin Barsoomian warriors opening its maw to expose its teeth. As if caught by surprise—evident by the sword still in its scabbard—one of the men is standing upright and poised to attack with just a dagger in hand. His companion crouches warily with a basket-hilt sword held out, tip up. His shoulder length black hair swings forward with motion. A massive bone protrudes from the floor, the ball joint of a femur seemingly larger than the lizard itself. The foreground around it is littered with human bones, swords, and shields.

Cass, Enrique and Hafid are still in their spacesuits while on Mars.

Cass: Wow, did you get that from what she said?
Enrique: No, her cultured ways of speaking are far too rarified and sophisticated for us unwashed plebes to interpret.

JOHN CARTER OF MARS (1979)
Acrylic - 22" x 28"

I’ve had a special fondness for The Martian Tales by Edgar Rice Burroughs even since I first read them in my early teens. 1/4

#sciencefiction #scifi #sff #scifiart #illustration #edgarriceburroughs #johncarter #barsoom #mars #dejahthoris #tarstakas

On the back of a saddled Martian bird, John Carter flies above a barren red landscape with the horizon tilted at a steep angle. His arms are spread wide as he grips reins in one hand and a rapier in the other. Dejah Thoris has a worried expression as she holds him around his waist. The bird twists with its eyes and beak pointing in a different direction than rider, giving a disorienting change in motion. Behind flies Tars Tarkas on his own winged mount. An elegant city with tall spires and onion-shaped peaks sits in the distance framed by a huge moon. Another smaller moon hangs bright in the gray blue sky.

Cass, Enrique, Hafid and the ducks take off their space helmets while on Mars. A voice from off-panel interrupts their conversation.
Cass: Anyway, I'm not complaining! Let's find a place to plant!
Voice: Excuse me!
