When it is dark, humans like to use well-lit streets but bats prefer to use dark areas. Urban planning should accomodate both.

@c_dan4th you’ve asked the right person! Each closure has an environmental impact study performed prior to designing the closure method. If it’s determined that the opening may be supportive for bats, it will have a ladder-style grate placed on the opening. Lets bats in, keeps people out. Colorado has led the way in bat-friendly mine closures! The first one in the state went in around 1994 I think. Here’s a sign I designed which has been going up on recent projects.

Black text on bright yellow metal sign with a line art drawing of a cute bat on it that reads in part:
THIS AREA IS
BAT-FRIENDLY!
THIS ABANDONED MINE
WAS GATED TO PROTECT YOU.
IT WAS ALSO GATED TO PROTECT THE BATS
THAT USE THIS SITE FROM BEING DISTURBED.
Abandoned mines are dangerous for people
but are great places for bats.
Please stay out of abandoned mines like this
for your safety and for the safety of
the wildlife that use it.
THANKS FOR BEING
A FRIEND TO BATS!

#Berlin not only boasts numerous lakes but also #waterways, both artificial and natural, all of which are sites of considerable #aquatic #biodiversity. My photos show the #BerlinSpandau #ShipCanal near the #Westhafen (a #harbor). C. C. Voigt et al. (2019) demonstrated the importance these waterways for terrestrial animals as well, namely e.g. #bats, which use #waterbodies and vegetated areas to bypass #artificiallight routes

The bat is wearing a straw hat with their ears poking out through holes in the hat. They are also wearing some blue overalls. They look up towards the viewer with a smile on their face and a piece of straw sticking out of their mouth.

In 1882, the French Naturalist Camille Viguier was amongst the first to propose the existence of a sense. His speculation proved correct; many – from to and sea use the Earth’s magnetic field to navigate.

Yooooo, the Bat Conservation International 2026 calendar is now available on their store! I'm sure a lot of my followers would find it quite befitting for their aesthetic and it supports a good cause!

Medieval bats were said to hang in groups like grapes in high places and if one bat fell, all the bats fell. This pair of bats is from the Worksop Beastiary (c1185).

In a green rectangular frame on a manuscript page, against a red and gilt background, two smiling blue-grey bats with outspread wings are hanging out together. Their wings look like elaborate tentacled cloaks and appear to be ribbed. Both bats' hindpaws extend outside of the wings but their long tails are tucked within the bottom point of the wings. Neither bat appears to have any sort of arm and the wings appear to attach somewhere behind their bodies. The bat on the right appears to have small fangs while the one on the left has a teddy bear face. Image from Morgan Library, MS M.81 (The Worksop Bestiary), folio 54v.

Bats love hibernating by hanging off those!

Compilation of Detox Doodles!

This is my daily sketching habit in an effort to curb mindless scrolling.

My favorites are the Kiwi Birds and the Beavers (also the anteater hug)!

Compilation of 6 photos of sketchbook pages. Top row consists of sketches of bats, anteaters and koalas. Bottom row consists of drawings of seagulls, beavers and kiwi.

If their blood was drawn using a thistle, it was supposed to be able to cure snakebite. This bat is from the Lutterell Psalter (c1325-1340).
