@jrose

The funny thing is: It's not as wrong as the architecture of late 1980s IBM-compatible personal computers would have one believe.

Examples:

On a 1980s #BBCMicro home computer with a Second Processor, the I/O processor was the primary boot processor and responsible for initializing the CPU. On a modern #RaspberryPi the GPU initializes and boots the CPU.

On many Big Iron systems there was a Console Processor, not even merely a graphics co-processor but a fully-fledged personal computer, that instructed the central processor; and I/O Processors for DASDs and stuff.

Even the Transputer architecture was designed to have a single front-end processor that would load the initial code into and boot the other processors.

And then there's the very important 80486 running Minix inside some PC architecture chipsets. (-:

Enhanced #Elite on the #Acorn #Electron now has proper docking computers.

Good to see they're as nail-bitingly dodgy as all the other versions!

Next on the list is to add 21 additional ship designs with spawning and tactic logic. That might take a while...

Goodness gracious, great balls of fire!

(In enhanced Acorn Electron Elite, that is.)

Video 1: The sun at Diso in Electron Elite

The speed isn't bad, considering the sun is probably the most screen-memory-intensive (i.e. slow) feature of BBC Micro Elite.

Video 2: Approaching the sun through a minor asteroid belt.

I've always loved flying towards the sun in BBC Micro Elite, so it's good to see it on the Electron. That ball of flickering fire hanging in the blackness of space always has such a feeling of remoteness and grandeur.

Video 3: Fuel scoops

I've also implemented fuel scooping, so those fuel scoops can finally be used for... well, scooping fuel, and not just cargo canisters. Don't leave home without them!

On the right: Electron Elite using the #BBCMicro sun code to show variable sized stars on the system chart.

Now I just have to hook this up to the solar system, so Electron Elite can finally have suns and fuel scooping...

Here's a video of the latest features in enhanced #Acorn #Electron #Elite:

* Proper disk access menu
* Military lasers
* Extended system descriptions (edible poets!)
* System search
* Planetary details (meridians/equators and craters)
* Fast, flicker-free graphics

It's looking good!

Enhanced Electron Elite is for the Acorn Electron with 16K sideways RAM. It uses the SRAM to speed things up, and I'm backporting faster code from the #BBCMicro and #C64 versions too.

The plan is to add as many cool features as I can: on the list are suns, lots of ship blueprints, Thargoids, a proper docking computer and more.

Showing the Elk some well-deserved love! Watch this space...

Here's a selection appearances by 8-bit computers. "Codename Icarus" has what appears to be a slightly modified Commodore PET 8000 series machine. There are brief appearances of a Televideo TS-803 in "Thrillkill" and a Kaypro 4 in "Brand New Cherry Flavor". Finally an episode of "Full House" (the British one, not the American) has a pivotal role for an Acorn BBC Micro.

My new project is an all-singing, all-dancing version of #Elite on the #Acorn #Electron.

It's early days, but I'm really enjoying it. So here’s a thread about the wonderful community hardware and software I'm using to port #BBCMicro Elite to the Elk. (1/6)

I have added flicker-free planets to the #Apple II version of #Elite.

Flicker-free on the left, original version on the right.

That's every 6502 version done now. No-one left behind!
