Neighboring shed at the #Allotment has a couple of #beehives, but they have been empty the last couple of years… but now it seems a #bee swarm has decided to settle into one of them!

The guy left only 45min before they arrived, so I’m sure he will be surprised next time he comes to the garden 🤣

Great activity in the hives today! Plenty to forage in the neighborhood - dandelion, apple, pear, chestnut and rapeseed among much else blooming at the moment. Will probably need to add another super to both hives in a week or so.

The bees today. Very busy, pollen coming in, and the West hive having a traffic jam caused by a bunch of drones on the landing board.

I haven't seen any activity at the bait hive and the bees at the other empty hives seem to be off target and taking a break.

I made a deep Langstoth box, then I cut it in half and made two 5-frame nuc hives. 100% recycled wood except the frames shown. Painted with boiled linseed oil, the 'white' is zinc oxide mixed in, and the green is green iron oxide and zinc oxide mix. Migratory type covers, no inner. Cleat handles after it was painted so a dado could be cut so they could be glued. Glued and screwed throughout with some dowels to align the panel pieces. More in ALT.

The mostly finished nuc hives. Bottom board with raised edges because the boxes were too short to leave enough space without so built like some commercial bottom boards with a 3/4 inch space. Entrance reducer with 5 inch and 1 inch openings about 3/8 inch high. Bottom board and top cover painted on inside. Inside of the boxes are not painted. The zinc oxide in the paint helps prevent mold. Plus it's a bit of UV protection. The handles need to be painted. The tops need a hole cut for feeding and plug made for the hole. The handles are glued in a shallow dado and screwed from both sides. One bottom board is pine, the other is plywood. The covers are plywood. All joints glued and screwed. The nuc hives before sanded and painted. A shim was added to the top of the box edges to create more bee space above the frames. Most of the boxes was made from wood from a top bar hive.

The bees have mostly yellow pollen, and some bright orange and a mix of dirty colors but not a lot of that. The first drone bee spotted coming out of the West hive. A drone and a very light colored bee at the Center hive which has more darker bees. It really stands out.

Finished and submitted the new short story today! Most of the afternoon was our first spring checkup on two of our five #beehives. We're going to check the other three tomorrow.

Episode two hundred and seventy-one is up now! Today's song is Lover's Spit by Broken Social Scene.

I discuss the song's blunt language presenting its theme plainly, and the alternate version featuring the vocals of Feist.

Beehives in villages in the hinterland of Arhavi (Artvin province/ NE Turkey). Sometimes they are set up in places that are difficult to access so that bears, for example, cannot reach them.

#Italy: Wasp altered by #ClimateChange destroying #beehives

#VespaOrientalis has wrecked 40,000 beehives in three regions

"An Italian wasp which has turned into a more aggressive alien species due to climate change is wreaking havoc among Italian beehives, green farming officials told ANSA Tuesday.

"The Vespa Orientalis hornet has become just the latest of threats to bees, whose declining numbers are jeopardising agriculture worldwide, said Laura Bortolotti, lead researcher of the Crea AA - Agriculture Environment think tank.

"The hornet has recently destroyed some 40,000 beehives in #Lazio, #Campania and #Molise officials said.

"'Despite being a native species in Italy, the Vespa Orientalis is behaving as if it were an alien species; its behavior towards bees has changed in a few years, becoming increasingly #aggressive, also due to climate change which, in some way, has altered the environmental balance', Bortolotti told ANSA.

"Vespa Orientalis is also an increasing threat to public health in urban areas, they said."

Day 8 of #streamink2024 is Honey Day! These lil beekeepers are attending my to their hives with the greatest of love and care, and the lil bees are enjoying all the wildflowers dotting the nearby hills. Nevermind that this honeyed ink colour kind of makes it look like a desert planet shhhhhh
Anyway, thanks to the amazing Koala twitch.tv/kevokoala for the prompt!

I spent the morning in the #shed on our #allotment making up frames for our #beehives while listening to the #EmergenceMagazine podcast.

Just about a perfect way to spend a Sunday morning.

How urban beekeeping in Canadian city might be driving the native species away
In her research, Quebec researcher Gail McInnis found that the rapid growth in urban beekeeping was negatively impacting nearby wild bee populations.
