During a sunny summer day back in July, I took one of my medium-format cameras for a walk around Prenzlauer Berg. I was testing out some expired film that I had in my fridge, and there was only a black and white one in the pack I brought with me.

And I loved that I put it in the camera around the Ernst-Thälmann Park since I managed to capture this gorgeous weeping willow tree by the lake in a gloomy tone.

The black and white image shows a set of six rectangular mailboxes mounted unusually on two adjacent tree trunks in a forest. The rough bark of the trees contrasts with the smooth, metallic surface of the mailboxes, creating a striking juxtaposition between nature and human design.

Hard to get into the Funky Pelican with all the barrels and such surrounding it. Leica R4, Kodak Plus-X (expired 1994, shot at EI 80), Rodinal 1:50.

There’s something really enjoyable about counting off exposure time by quietly muttering “one Mississippi” to approximate a single second of open shutter. Followers may recall that a friend gave me an old Pho-Tak box camera which appears as my profile avatar. The left half of the photo shows the right shoulder, mane, and snout of Fortitude, one of the two sculpted lions guarding the library at Fifth Avenue and 42nd street. The right half of the photo shows the arched windows and American flags of the Beaux Art Astor Trust Company building.

A woman in a flowing black outfit admires an element of Jennie C. Jones’s musical sculpture Ensemble. The piece shown rises about three meters from its plinth and is comprised of two geometric prisms made of steel. Musical strings drawn tautly over a soundbar bar on the right hand prism enable it to be tuned and played like a zither.

There are several of these on the boardwalk in Seaside Heights. None of them are open on a Monday morning. Smartflex 3445, Kodak Tri-X 320 TXP, Rodinal 1:50, Kodak Anastigmat No. 33 lens.

This place is a typographic nightmare. A sign on the roof says “Kohr’s The Original Since 1919” attached to a two scoop ice cream cone. The face of the building facing the boardwalk says the following: “Coca Cola enjoy summer Frozen Custard and Ice Cream Kohr’s The Original Since 1919 P J’s Place Seaside Heights NJ Coca Cola enjoy summer Kohr’s The Original Since 1919 Kohr’s The Original Since 1919 Coca Cola Coca Cola.” The side of the building is similarly festooned, but you really don’t want me to write all that crap down here.

The Polaroid that started it all, and my enjoyment of Polaroid Pack Film, the Colorpack II! It's simple, it's plastic, but it is so fantastic!

Colour photograph of the metal doors to a local transformer substation set into a stone wall in an urban park. The plain, grey doors and parts of the wall are covered in colourful graffiti of letters that make no words. Combined with the reddish tones of the expired film, the colours of the graffiti, stone wall and dead leaves on the ground create a warm, vibrant and slightly autumny atmosphere.

A dirt path winds through dry, rocky hills with scattered bushes and trees, leading towards distant mountains under a hazy sky. The scene is in black and white.

Narrow boat entering a lock. In the early 20th century, facing steep competition from railways, the Grand Union Canal rebuilt its locks to take two boats. One is already in the lock. You can see the mouth of the old single lock, paved over. Of course, the investment failed.
