Did you know you can commission a high-quality professional city-level survey?

Turns out that 73% of Berkeley residents actually support expanding bike infrastructure — including 57% of non-bikers.

This isn't a niche issue anymore. Will council listen?

I research South Asian American histories in Berkeley, California. I just came across the earliest story yet.

In 1880s Berkeley, a turbaned figure known as Old James wandered the hills.

The “Hindu” immigrant milker on a dairy farm was a curiosity to neighbors.

James' life, as a child on the farm remembered it, was a mix of labor, opium addiction, prophecy, and maybe loneliness. 🧵

I wrote about him at
secretdesihistory.com/old-jame

A colorized historical illustration of 'Old James,' a South Asian immigrant in 1880s Berkeley, California, walking alone through hilly terrain resembling the San Francisco Bay Area, Berkeley, or Tilden Park. He is dressed in practical, rugged farm clothing typical of a cow milker in 1880s California: a loose, long-sleeved shirt, worn trousers, and a simple apron. He wears a traditional South Asian turban, his face weathered with deep lines, and a contemplative expression, softly singing to himself. In the foggy background, a well-fed female American Jersey cow is visible, adding depth and mystique to the scene. The setting uses muted, natural tones for a vintage, lifelike look similar to historical illustrations, with no modern elements in view, evoking nostalgia.

Absolutely appalling report about possible radioactive dumping at the #AlbanyBulb, César Chávez Park, and other shoreline locations:
“The fact that DTSC has sat on these documents for 44 years — shameful doesn’t begin to describe it,” said Janet Johnson, co-chair of the Richmond Shoreline Alliance.

"My children spent their entire school careers in the Berkeley schools—successfully, I should add. I am also Jewish…the hearing marks an expansion of conservative and far-right critiques of public schools, which have already become battlegrounds over an array of controversies, from critical race theory and ethnic studies to LGBTQ rights and gender identity. However well-prepared Morthel…might be, it would seem to be a no-win situation"
