Schafe direkt am Radweg. 😍
Doch die Schafe hatten scheinbar Angst vor mir. Sie wichen zurück als ich anhielt. Manche jedoch blieben wie versteinert stehen. Eins war wohl besonders raffiniert und hat sich gekonnt hinter einem Baum versteckt.

After 2500 km, almost 17k meters of ascent, 25 days of cycling (counted from Germany, 22 from Prague), 8 countries and 5 capital cities, I made it to my final destination Istanbul 🕌

The idea of cycling from Germany to Istanbul seemed abstract to me when I first told people about it. I didn’t fully believe I could do it until I arrived at Belgrade, Serbia. Day after day I got stronger, solved problems, learnt about my limits, met kind people, and accumulated km after km. Sometimes I did 50 km, max. 160 km, on the average 100 km per day. Occasionally I wished to cycle less, but lack of water or food supply, need for a shower, weather conditions or dangerous environments led me to continue. I did my best to stick to my motto of taking it slow, and to fully appreciate all experiences—good and bad—I made on my way 🌱

Many people asked “Why Istanbul”? I think I was fascinated by the idea of cycling through countries I’ve never been to and that are less rich than where I live. Also listening to Turkish & Kurdish music and watching a documentary about the Hagia Sophia made me curious. Also, some non-cis male cyclists who shared their stories of traveling by bike around this globe encouraged me to go on this adventure 🌍

This adventure kind of changed my point of view. I now do reflect on my privileges differently. Also, I have a different picture of myself: It isn’t despite my weaknesses and sensibilities that I achieve my goals, but with and through them ✨

If you ever plan to cycle to Istanbul coming from Europe, here's some information and recommendations:

There are no proper bike lanes leading to Istanbul. No matter which way you will choose, it will not be a lot of fun. I chose the fastest way (the federal highway D100) leading from Edirne to Lüleburgaz and Çorlu, where I stayed one night in a hotel (25€). If you are cycling in a group it might be easier to find a spot for wild camping. But the area around the highway leading to Çorlu isn‘t very inviting to camp. I even asked a staff member of one of the factories whether I could camp on their property, but they refused. I guess they were afraid I could be a foreign spy on two wheels 😼

You can find a very useful map showing all different ways leading to Istanbul here: https://www.crazyguyonabike.com/doc/page/?o=3d2&page_id=662371&v=33

Let‘s talk about borders!

When bikepacking around the globe, you‘ll have to cross national borders at some point. And that‘s where you have to aknowledge some of your huge privileges as a German traveler: You can only cross borders “legally” when having a certain nationality (or a nationality at all) and enough money to afford visa (if necessary), when you’re not in danger of being extradited for any reasons whatsoever, and the list goes on..

If you make use of these undeserved privileges, at least don‘t do it carelessly.

In case you have some money left, you can donate to human rights/volunteer organizations fighting for refugees rights—e.g. for Seapunks (link in bio).

Since September 2023 the volunteers on board of the ship “Sea Punk I” provide fleeing people in the central Mediterranean Sea with life-jackets, food, and water, and save them from drowning. Your donations help with the maintenance of the ship, the supply of people and volunteers at the site and the purchase of necessary equipment, food etc.

Never forget: Soldiers and cops are willing to shoot at people. Otherwise they would have chosen a different profession. They will shoot when they are told to do so. And sometimes they will even shoot when they are not told so.

While spending some days in Sofia, I caught a stomach flu and couldn‘t cycle for almost one week.

In my experience vomiting and diarrhea are some of the most nasty symptoms you can have while being on a bikepacking trip. Your body will be very weak, so it will barely be able to move you and your bike. If that ever happens to you, try to make sure you have people around you who can help if needed.

Don’t take activated charcoal pills or any comparable medicine. Your body has to get rid of the pathogens, so let it have diarrhea (go see a doctor if it lasts longer than three days). Drink a lot of water and supplement electrolytes. I managed to cycle to an official campsite, where I spend the first two worst days. As soon as I could eat again I cycled 70km (no ascents) to the next city where I spend another four days for recovery in an air-conditioned accomodation. I only ate porridge, bananas, and babyfood for some days. Also I bought some probiotics in a pharmacy, it helped a lot to normalize my digestion.

I could have hit the road again ealier, but then said to myself it would be better to wait one more day just to be safe. If there is no need to rush, take it slow ✌🏼 While being sick and feeling miserable you might question certain of your decisions as well as your bikepacking trip in general. You have to go through these emotions. Everything will work out fine. For the moment it sucks. A lot. But you will be doing better in some days 🐛🦋

I always wondered how much my bike + luggage (tent, air mattress, clothes, food etc.) weighted, but I didn‘t have the equipment to find out. Suddenly, on my way to the Turkish border, at a very remote little town in Bulgaria, while stopping because I got komooted again, someone comes to me, happily waving their arms and inviting me to weigh my bike on a gigantic scale. I mean, what?! I love bikepacking for unexpected encounters like that❤️‍🔥

When I first told people about my plan of going on a bikepacking trip from Prague to Istanbul with my 50 year old road bike, someone said it was like taking a 1970s Porsche and mounting a bicycle rack or a caravan to it—meaning that it was kind of absurd 🤷🏼

Well, I must admit that there‘s something to it.. My handlebars will always be wobbly with this amount of luggage. Sometimes, when cycling uphill, I dream of a Shimano 820 1-12 groupset. And when the wobbly handlebars get a bit too much out of control I look forward to riding a proper gravelbike one day.

However, I love my old french bike a lot 🖤 We have only been together for 1.5 years, and we had a very good time on several nice adventures in France, Italy, and Germany. In this small amount of time we both changed each other (yeah ok, it was mostly me exchanging parts of my bike, but I like the idea of our relationship not being onesided).

And now we‘re going from Germany to Turkey together. So far, we made it to Bulgaria. I mean, that‘s damn cool, right? 😎

10 learnings about cycling in Serbia

1. Official cycle paths like Eurovelo 6, 11 & 13 in Serbia are basically federal highways
2. Serbians drive very dangerously, and they will honk to you a lot
3. therefore, sometimes, you might question your existence as a cyclist on Serbian roads (as well as your existence in general)
4. wearing a reflective vest and installing a safety noodle or something comparable on your bike might help to encourage car drivers to keep their distance
5. many Serbs are very hospitable
6. many Serbs are queerphobic (some people told me that you better don‘t show signs of your queerness in public if you want to be safe)
7. never go swimming without clothes, people will feel very offended, especially when they are Jehovah‘s Witnesses, they are even up to calling the police in order to get you arrested
8. Serbian puff pastries are very delicious
9. be aware of street dogs
10. there are very few stores to sell screw-in gas catridges in Serbia, Decathlon is one of them (4 stores in 3 cities in the whole country, so they are often out of stock); make sure you carry enough supply with you; if you pass through Belgrade you may be lucky to find @primusequipment gas catridges in the little ProAlpin Outdoor stoor at street Terazije

Before I'll cross the border to Denmark, I ditched some stuff and send it back home.

Say farewell to:

- Laptop
- GoPro (I'm not the type of vloging, I guess 🙈)
- Spoon/Fork/Knife-Set
- Mugg
- 1 x Leggins
- 1 x Top
- Towel for kitchen stuff

I have more room for food an lesser weight to carry now. 😊

I pitched my tent at the most beautiful campground, yesterday. 🫠
In the middle of the little village Zalk is a small place with everything you need as a hiker/bikepacker. And there is no room for campervans under the apple trees and their blossoms. 🌸🐝
I slept so well this night. 😴🐑🏕️
Even if it's time to say goodbye 🫡

Sometimes is all you need to feel lucky: a free hot shower and hut to cook and sit in, because the weather is still rainy, cold and windy. 😌🙏🏻
I wish every human being could enjoy this little things...
But I think some peoples are just able to be happy with "big deals". 🤔
Try to enjoy the small things, my friends! 🙂🌦️🌈
