Did you know Kathleen Hanna did cool stuff? IT’S TRUE!

This gets a little fawning, but how could it not? It’s about Kathleen Hanna, a prime architect of everything cool in the 90s. My biggest complaint: They never revealed if Le Tigre was named after the knockoff Izod shirt that J. C. Penney used to sell.

Today’s fake poster was almost based on The Wedding Singer, but I liked this one more.

Just bought #BikiniKill The Singles cassette tape for #BandcampFriday. I think have the CD somewhere, but I only have a record player and cassette deck hooked up to my stereo these days.

bikinikill.bandcamp.com/album/

The cover of the cassette version of Bikini Kill "The Singles" cover folded out, showing the photos of the inside: Four black and white photos (one of each bandmate) and to the left a photo of a stuffed toy rabbit with text underneath that says "Bikini Kill Records bikinikill.com." All of this is on a black background.

Underneath, a cherry red cassette tape with the band name, album and song titles written in white font.

I love music for the rhythms, melodies and intertwining instrumentation. Some of my favorite music has lyrics in languages I don't know. In that sense, #BikiniKill has never been one of my favorite bands musically, which is why I was so surprised at being reduced to an emotional puddle when I saw them play a reunion show a couple of years back.

This morning, I woke up with the line "I believe in the radical possibilities of pleasure," in my head and it made me remember that feeling of revisiting their music as an older woman with a different perspective. BK used music to carry life-saving messages that were incredibly transformative and therapeutic. Maybe not my favorite beats and melodies, but still so powerfully moving.

You might remember riotgrrl legend Kathleen Hannah from my devious playlist about female grunge musicians (tinyurl.com/yamze5dw).

#NewBloods memorabilia including some flyers from our European tour—one from a show in Leeds and another in Lyon. I remember feeling that Europe understood and valued our band more than the US did. They danced harder, asked us to play our short set all over again from the beginning, fed and housed us well and we even returned home with some money in our pockets.

We played with musicians we’d admired for years. We played #Ladyfest London with The Raincoats. They came and picked us up from the train station, brought us to their house, fed us lunch and interviewed us for a documentary that never came out. Pete Dale of Pussycat Trash, Red Monkey & Slampt Records put on our show in Leeds. He was playing in Chronicity at the time. He told me that #BikiniKill had played the very stage we were about to play and did a HR-style backflip off of it. We were like the newest members of the club at the time—part of this worldwide network of people making Queer Feminist #Punk Culture.

This should’ve been one of the best times of my life, but I was dating the drummer, we’d broken up before we had to go on this tour, and that made everything really hard and unpleasant. When we got home from tour, the band broke up for good. The End. There’s always a goddamn fly in the honey, isn’t there?

A poster featuring three musicians from the band "New Bloods." The image includes a white female bassist singing into a microphone, a black female violinist, and a black female drummer. Colorful lines connect the three figures, and the text "New Bloods” with the album title “the secret life” in all lowercase below. There is a cut & paste collage aesthetic to the poster. A Kill Rock Stars logo is in the lower left hand corner.A promotional poster for a music event featuring the bands New Blood, ChroniCity, and Broken Arm. The design includes a halftone image of a person with long hair and eyes closed, adorned with colorful dots around the eyes and cheeks. The background of the poster is filled with colorful dots arranged in concentric circles and paisley shapes. It includes the information: The Packhorse (venue), Wednesday 7 May, 8pm/5 poundsA black and white magazine cover featuring a Osa Atoe playing the violin while singing into a microphone. The title reads "Maximum Rocknroll" along with the issue number and date, "September 2007." The cover includes various band names including NEW BLOODS in bold all-caps lettering.A green flyer promoting a concert by "New Bloods" and "Passion Armée." The event is scheduled for May 19th at 20h in Lyon, France, with a suggested door fee of 3 euros. The flyer shows a black and white collage of three musicians playing their instruments on bright green paper. There is a cut & paste aesthetic to the flyer.
