I just noticed that there is a bird sound identifying app in F-Droid since September. It is called whoBIRD and makes use of the BirdNET model by K. Lisa Yang Center for Conservation Bioacoustics at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and Chemnitz University of Technology.

It recognizes me trying to be a bird as a 42 % human whistle. So, maybe it works?

Realy intersting talk and a good overview on the current state/ problems. Loved the input about the footprint and repurposing/ upcycling old tech. Thanks a lot

On this note: I know Udo Noll is using Raspberries as listening stations/ BirdNet stations in nature reserves here in Germany and has a lot of experience with mapping and repurposing tech. Here are his main projects:

Anfang Oktober geben Eeva Ojanperä (eevaojanperae.de/) und ich einen Workshop zum Thema Field Recording und Akustik. Die Anmeldung und das weitere Programm finden sich bald auf der Website:
range-festival.de/

Ich freue mich sehr Teil des Festivals sein zu können und bin auch schon auf die Installationen und Konzerte gespannt.

Migration season is upon us. Recorded these Starlings when taking a break on our holiday trip quite close to the Autobahn. The constant chatter and imitation of other birds is so fantastic.

Team Bioacoustic AI at IBAC! @bioacousticai

Some happy people gathered together. But these are in fact super heroes! Or, more precisely, members of the "Bioacoustic AI" doctoral network

Fantastic talk by MSc student Isabella Rojas, illustrating her use of Transformers to identify hundreds of species in New Zealand soundscapes, with the use of a customised frequency scale to include ultrasonic audio too.

"Foundation Models for Bioacoustics -- a Comparative Review" arxiv.org/abs/2508.01277 - a very good review/benchmarking paper on the latest deep learning models for bioacoustics. Recommended. Covers many of the important aspects of models.

I'm very proud of Ines Nolasco - she passed her PhD defence with flying colours! (aka "minor corrections")

It's been great working with her on animal sounds, individuality, and machine learning. ......... She's now available for postdoc jobs etc. Highly recommended!

Me and Ines, both beaming, of course!
