Jon Somerscales and Andrew Stone closed the evening with Phycologica - a mesmerising exploration of art, biology and light. Their interactive installation uses living bioluminescent algae that glow in response to movement. Beautiful and strange in equal measure.

Anyone on here make or know someone who makes #BioArt (art with or heavily about blood/tissue/disease) and is willing to briefly chat with a semi-newbie?

I'm looking to run a provocative project idea by an elder. I'm open to whatever format (email, messaging, voice, etc) is best for you.

I make art about disease, and have for quite some time, but my next piece idea is quite different than my chronically ill-ustrations: illmarks.com

Thank you 🏳️‍🌈 🏳️‍⚧️ ✊

„What does a bacterial civilization leave behind?“ von Yitong Tseo (US) – eine Bakterienkolonie, sechs Jahre lang isoliert gezüchtet, über 8.000 Generationen.

„MycoGravity“ – Pilze im All?

Selin Balci's Faces (2025) at the Baker Artist Awards exhibit at the Baltimore Museum of Art

It's a large series of Polaroids taken of staff at the museum. She took samples of invisible microorganisms from each of her subjects' bodies and with them grew mold spores on the photographs.

This image shows the front and back covers of "Technoetic Arts" academic journal, Volume 23 Number 1.
The front cover (left side) features a light blue background with white text. The journal title "Technoetic Arts" appears prominently at the top, with the volume information below. The cover includes a table of contents listing several academic articles with page numbers and authors, including topics on transgression in academic outcomes, synthetic love, neuralgia and cyborgs, hegemonic knowledge in art practices, containment, posthuman planets, satellite warfare, and political ecology. At the bottom is a barcode and ISSN information.
The back cover (right side) displays the same journal title and volume information at the top against a white background. The main visual element is an abstract artistic image featuring swirling red and black forms with organic, flowing shapes that create a dynamic, somewhat turbulent composition. At the bottom is the Intellect publisher logo and ISSN number (1477-965X).
The overall design presents a contrast between the clean, academic layout of the front cover and the more artistic, abstract imagery of the back cover, reflecting the journal's focus on the intersection of technology and arts.

The blobs keep growing as I add more oats.

It's so unusual seeing a single cell get this big. And look at the pattern on the center.

#Physarum #slimeMold #bioart

Close shot. Petri dish. Triangular piece of paper where the yellow slime mold woke up and started moving. To the right, two oats are covered by it, to the bottom, a bunch of oats are half covered already. Between these two masses, an intricate pattern of tubes connecting them.

Step 3 - It's Alive!

Slime mold woke up and moved out of its paper and onto the oat. It's nomming and growing now.

The two original sclerotia didn't activate, so I used 4 samples more with slightly different conditions. 2 of them are doing great, the others not so much.

I didn't properly measure or jot any data down, so this isn't Science, but now I have a general idea of how this works and I can go for precision next time.

8 year olds are better at this than me.

#Physarum #bioart

Plastic petri dish with a base of agar. To the right, a square piece of white paper where the mold used to be. To the left, 2 oats have been covered with the bright yellow slime mold, wich is expanding in two overlapping circles.

Kombucha scoby research with reclaimed frake noir 💦

Finding ways working with this material is been an interesting process, i learn to let go of expectations and outcomes as this co-creature or living material will take the lead. Is it a reflection or symptom of my circumstances? Maybe..

Step 2

The Physarum (I'm going to need 2 nicknames, feel free to contribute) was dormant on dry paper in its sclerotium form. I cut two pieces and added two drops of water to resurrect them. And some oats for breakfast.

Now we wait. Good luck, Phil and Phyllis.

#Physarum #bioart #biology #SlimeMold

One petri dish with a pice of wet paper with Physarum, hopefully, in the process of coming back to life.

I added a bunch of oats to this one to see what happens.

Everything's over a layer of agar that looks dusty, but it's just a lot of tiny air bubbles.A smaller Physarum, with only two oats.
