Some #biofouling species on parade!
Blue mussels, skeleton shrimp, amphipods oh my!
And tunicates with anemones on top!

It was nice to collaborate on this project, led by PhD student Emma at the Crick group using bacterial adhesion assays to optimise the hydrophobicity of surfaces to prevent biofouling.
We've just excluding yet another cruise ship infested with contaminants. This time it's the Azamara Quest.
Note that the exclusion only applies to special marine areas -- Fiordland, the Bay of Islands and Akaroa. Dirty ships are still permitted to dock in Dunedin, Lyttelton (Christchurch), Wellington, Napier, Timaru, Tauranga and Auckland.
Yet another cruise ship has been turned away from NZ for having a dirty bottom. I believe three makes a hat-trick.
This news story from ABC News about a delay in the docking of a cruise liner in Port #Melbourne due to its hull being biofouled may have been getting some attention for its impact on passengers, but if you want to know more about the reasons behind the decision to delay its docking check out the research journal link I've added about the role of shipping as a vector for #marine #InvasiveSpecies
