Beware of "compostable" products that aren't actually compostable at home. In digging through my compost pile this week I unearthed 3 forks (from takeout food I purchased several years ago) that I think were made by the California-based company, Karat Earth (aka Lollicup). On Amazon and elsewhere the sentence the company uses in marketing is "simply toss the fork into a compost bin when finished." And the forks themselves have the text, "compostable" embossed on them. On company's own website, however, is a logo from the Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI) indicating, in a small font, that forks are "commercially compostable only," which means they only begin to break down at ~190 °F (88 °C). I'm quite stuck in making #PLA at home from sourkraut, I'd need high purity sulfuric acid to actually get this lactic acid out of calcium lactate (egg shells + pickle juice). I might try using citric acid and heating that up. But if that doesn't work, PHA seems even better and more homebrewable.
Anyways, making the #fff #fdm #filament using no paleotechnic products. That would be the most #solarpunk thing ever.

You want less total plastic? Tax plastic by weight. Want fewer plastic items? Tax plastic by item. Want both? #Tax both.

Tax #bioplastic _less_ than plastic. Because it actually causes less harm.
You know what you can do with that money? Compensate #poor people who are disproportionally impacted by the tax. Though, say, #grocery #subsidies.
I find it really hard to believe that our #politicians don't know any of this. I believe that, instead, the just care a ton more about the #optics of their policies than they care about the #environment or about #poverty.
When #polemics substitutes for #policy it dooms us all.
