Happy #WorldBiodiversityDay !

Clapper Rail at the Marine Nature Study Area, Oceanside, NY, 5/10. Sometimes called a "marsh hen," this salt-marsh dweller glides effortlessly through dense vegetation, helped by its laterally compressed body profile. As with other salt-marsh species, this species is threatened by encroaching development, climate change and pollution.

"Clapper Rails are chickenlike marsh birds with stout bills and stubby tails. They are noticeably larger than similarly shaped Virginia Rails... Clapper Rails have a gray face; light-colored head, neck, and breast; a darker back; and barred sides and belly. Underparts vary from gray to dull cinnamon. The bill is orange, while legs are light yellow or pink (when not covered with mud)." (AllAboutBirds).

House Finch Courtship

This morning, I watched a group of house finches (Haemorhous mexicanus). Among them was a single male, and wherever he moved, the gathering of female finches followed. I observed this same behavior last spring—it seems to be a seasonal pattern. At times, the females jostled for position, occasionally engaging in brief scuffles, seemingly competing for proximity to him. It’s a fascinating dynamic to witness. This photo captures the male along with most of the females, though one or two were just outside the frame.

"The image captures a striking scene of one male house finch amid a gathering of females. The male stands out with his rich red plumage, a vivid splash of color against the softer, muted tones of his female counterparts. His feathers radiate warmth, catching the light with an almost glowing intensity, while the females—dressed in earthy browns and subtle streaks—form a harmonious contrast around him. They are positioned in a loose cluster, some appearing attentive, others seemingly indifferent, yet their presence creates an unspoken connection between them all. The background is softly blurred, emphasizing the birds while giving the image a quiet, serene atmosphere. The male finch, whether by chance or intent, holds a central presence, his posture dignified yet relaxed, as though aware of his role in this delicate social gathering." - Copilot

Pine Top Sentinel

This morning was a peaceful sit in the backyard with Charlie, listening to the birds' morning songs and capturing photos of familiar backyard visitors—as well as the occasional exotic guest. This particular image features a great crested flycatcher (Myiarchus crinitus), not a typical backyard resident. I spotted it about 100 meters away, perched atop a pine tree like a Christmas ornament. Thanks to Topaz Photo AI Super focus, the details in this image are sharper than expected, giving it an almost animated quality when you zoom in—me thinks.

"This image captures a great crested flycatcher perched at the very top of a slender pine branch, its delicate yet sturdy frame poised against the soft, pale sky. The bird’s striking features stand out—the gentle gray of its head, blending seamlessly into the warm brown tones of its wings and tail, while its belly gleams a subtle yellow. Its beak is slightly open, suggesting it might be in mid-call, sharing its song with the world. The pine needles surrounding the branch create a fine-textured contrast, their long, thin shapes reaching outward like nature’s brushstrokes. With the serene sky as a backdrop, the scene feels peaceful, an unspoken harmony between the bird and its surroundings. Canada Geese can be so excitable. 😂

A pair of Canada Geese on the surface of a body of water. The male (I suspect), on the right, is swimming towards us and to our right; his neck is stretched out towards his partner (on the left) and his beak is open in mid-honk, showing his large, reddish-pink tongue. Only the front part of his mate is shown in this image; she is facing towards the right and has her head on her chest, looking very much like she is not enjoying the racket being made right next to her. The Canada Goose has a black head with a white patch on the throat which extends up each side of the head, tapering to a point behind the eye. The beak and the neck is also black, but the base of the neck and the chest is whitish. The wings and the upper parts of the body are covered by feathers which are brown with paler edges. The tail feathers are black.

Golden hour shot of a Great Blue Heron yesterday evening at the end of my walk. #Birds 🪶 #Photography #BirdPhotography #Heron #FujiFilm #XT5 #Nature

A Great Blue Heron, nearly up to it body, all the way up its long legs, in water. A ripple spreads out from the bird as it took a step. The water looks dark, but some trees in the background catching the sun and giving a brighter reflection. The bird has its long neck extended upwards as it looks for some food in the water. The heron is blue-grey on back and wings, cinammon on the shoulders of the wing and top of legs. The head has a blue line above the eye going backwards, white over the top of the head. Long pointed bill. The front of the neck has a cinammon pattern against white, almost herringbone pattern. Large black pupil in the fading light, against a yellow background.

The image features a small bird perched on a reed stem. It has a pale eyebrow stripe above a darker eye-line. Its belly is covered in pale, almost white plumage, while the visible feathers on its back are a deeper brown.
