Moment of Stillness in the Forest

While sitting in the backyard with Charlie, we listened to a spirited sing-off between a northern cardinal, a brown thrasher, a great crested flycatcher, and a Carolina wren. Their songs filled the air, creating a beautiful chorus, though the only birds I actually spotted were the cardinals. As our outdoor session came to an end, I got up, and we wandered to the edge of the fence, scanning the surrounding trees in hopes of catching a glimpse of the hidden singers. Despite our efforts, they remained tucked away in the foliage. Just as we were looking up, a red-bellied woodpecker (Melanerpes carolinus) suddenly landed in the oak tree above us, offering an unexpected and welcome sight.

Jalohaikarat löysivät kosteikolle. Great white egrets found their way to wetland.
Pienehköllä kosteikkoalueella on ollut aika paljon vipinää: laulujoutsenpari, kurkia, välillä lokkeja ja tiiroja, silkki- ja mustakurkku-uikkuja, töyhtöhyyppiä, noki- ja liejukanoja, monenmoisia sorsia, pikkulintuja ja kahlaajia, kana- ja varpushaukkakin on vilahtanut ohitse... Jalohaikarat mahtuvat mukaan ja suhtautumista muihin lintuihin on ollut opettavaista seurata.

1. kuvassa taitaa olla emo ja sen viime vuoden poikanen, joka vaikutti aralta ja seurasi tätä mustanokkaista lintua tiiviisti.
2. kuvassa kaksi nuorta lintua, toisella kalasaalis, joten toinenkin on valppaana ja astelee lähemmäksi (kalat usein liikkuvat parvissa).
3. kuvassa haikarat lepäävät ja kurki tepastelee taustalla.
4. kuvassa kurki saa kyytiä. Viisi kurkea laskeutui vierailemaan hyvältä näyttävälle kosteikolle, mutta siellä pesivät kaksi kurkiparia eivät niitä kauan katselleet ja karkottivat pois. Omille tuleville poikasille pitää turvata hyvät elinmahdollisuudet ja riittävä ravinto.
