A starling -- a medium-sized black bird with white check markings and iridescent feathers -- is perched upon the branch of a small crabapple tree, the tree's branches coated in ice from recent freezing rain. The soft-focus background is mottled brown of leftover autumn leaves, and gray distant houses.

Raptor in a Snow Globe. In falling snow, our local "murder bird", a Cooper's Hawk, watches and waits for nearby birds to make a mistake.

At times, while I watched, the snow blew so intensely as to create whiteout conditions! This one frame proved to be a good balance between a clear view and no view at all.

I refilled the suet feeder this afternoon, having seen Bluebirds on it.

No sooner than I returned indoors, this male Eastern Bluebird showed up to grab a few beaks-full.

Mrs. Bluebird also showed up. Her colors are so drab compared with her mate's it's almost like they're different species!

We've seen Bluebirds around the yard all winter and now into spring. They're apparently nesting nearby though I doubt it's in a nest box I set up!

She is shown here perched upon the black metal grid of a suet feeder and looking toward the camera. Her head and back are a shade of gray-blue, her breast is a dull rust color.

Our first group of visiting ducks took off recently only to be replaced by six new migrants! Using our pond as a migration layover, three male and three female Lesser Scaubs were paddling about this afternoon. This photo shows one of the boys stretching his wings.
