They’re being covert, watching me from the tree this time instead of the roof.

“Surveillance Birb” is the local that frequents my balcony just to stare at me. Today, s/he decided to serenade me while I had coffee out there.

“Goddam snow”. Goldfinch in a tree. November 2022

Photo of a goldfinch perched on a twig of a tree branch, looking toward the camera, with snowflakes falling gently around it. The leaves are long gone. November 2022

Raptor in a Snow Globe. In falling snow, our local "murder bird", a Cooper's Hawk, watches and waits for nearby birds to make a mistake.

At times, while I watched, the snow blew so intensely as to create whiteout conditions! This one frame proved to be a good balance between a clear view and no view at all.

The Cooper's Hawk is a large bird of prey, back and head in dark brown plumage; breast is white, streaked with brown. The bird is viewed from its side, staring ahead. Dots of swirling, falling snow dot the background as the hawk perches among bare tree branches.

Sometimes the turkey eats you.

I refilled the suet feeder this afternoon, having seen Bluebirds on it.

No sooner than I returned indoors, this male Eastern Bluebird showed up to grab a few beaks-full.

Mrs. Bluebird also showed up. Her colors are so drab compared with her mate's it's almost like they're different species!

We've seen Bluebirds around the yard all winter and now into spring. They're apparently nesting nearby though I doubt it's in a nest box I set up!

Female Eastern Bluebird has markings somewhat similar to her male counterpart but much more subdued -- all the better for safety when nest-sitting. She is shown here perched upon the black metal grid of a suet feeder and looking toward the camera. Her head and back are a shade of gray-blue, her breast is a dull rust color.A male Eastern Bluebird pecks at a block of suet as he perches on the black metal grid that holds it in place. His head and back feathers are a vivid royal blue. Breast feathers are a red-brown. White feathers can be seen on the bird's underbelly.

Our first group of visiting ducks took off recently only to be replaced by six new migrants! Using our pond as a migration layover, three male and three female Lesser Scaubs were paddling about this afternoon. This photo shows one of the boys stretching his wings.

A duck, positioned facing the viewer, rises from its floating position, stretching tall, its wings half-extended to either side. The Bird has a grey-blue bill, dark head, neck, and breast, white underside. The surrounding pond waters are disrupted by many small waves.

On this gray and dreary day,
A lovely bluebird came my way.
He perched atop the shepherd's hook,
Allowing me to take a look.
Happiness he did not bring,
A burden too great for his small wing.
Beauty, though, he bears with ease,
That is enough for times like these.
A bright spot on a dreary day,
Gladness that he came my way.

A small bird sits atop the curve of a metal hanger for a bird feeder -- the feeder is not visible. The background is soft shades of gray. The small bird is viewed from the front, its head turned to our left. The bird's head plumage is an indigo blue; its breast is a rusty shade of red, the color parting and curving outward to the bird's sides. Beneath that curve the feathers are white, extending to the underside. Two tiny dark legs extend from the underside, gripping the metal hanger while the dark underside of the tail feathers jut beneath.
