Pesticide spray drift from intensive horticulture on the the mid-north coast NSW -
Discontent in the region.

Home owners, dairy and beef producers among those concerned about how pesticide use affects their land as well as water quality on the mid-north coast

“Between 2001 and 2016 blueberry farming expanded 400% – mainly around the Coffs Harbour region.”

“This monitoring showed the continued detection of pesticides in most waterways sampled, highlighting the need for ongoing monitoring in the region.”

“Monitoring in the Nambucca valley by the EPA has detected three different pesticides in low levels in three creeks, suggesting water quality in the area is not being impacted by excessive amounts of pesticides.”

№ 3 in my Snack Time series.

A close up colour photograph of some large blueberries in a white ceramic bowl. Some small water droplets are visible. The scene is lit from right side, slight reflections are bouncing off of the bowl and the berries.

The booming NSW blueberry industry has a very dark underside. Behind the glossy fruit in supermarkets are stories of withheld passports, visa loopholes, overcrowded and unsafe housing, and wages far below the legal minimum.
This isn’t an accident — it’s a system designed to squeeze vulnerable workers while corporations and farm owners profit. NSW still refuses to licence labour hire companies, a reform other states like Queensland have already adopted. Without it, dodgy labour contractors flourish and exploitation continues unchecked.
The government looks the other way because cheap labour means cheap exports, but the cost is paid by workers living in conditions that border on modern slavery.
If we can regulate unions, if we can regulate welfare recipients, then we can certainly regulate big agriculture and labour hire firms. Protecting workers’ rights should never come second to the profits of agribusiness.

The state of the #blueberries.

It's now chilly; tonight going down to 3 degrees Celsius and tomorrow up to 15 degrees Celsius.

There are still flowers and ripening berries.

*sad violins* I was food shopping earlier and saw that the season of European #blueberries has now ended. I know it's happening in September, but every year the end comes as a shock. All fresh blueberries sold now until May are grown in South America. Which means that my daily blueberry fix will now come from frozen blueberries until next spring. (I try to buy European produce only if they can grow it here, which is most fruit and veg except for bananas.) First world problems, I know, but European #blueberry season is a thing I celebrate internally. 😅

To mark this poignant date, here are some blueberries from my little potted bushes. I have four of them, three are pretty much dead, but this one here gave me a tiny handful of fruits and even developed a new shoot, yay!

Blueberry picking season is almost over but luckily the mushroom picking season is full on!

Nothing beats berries and mushrooms in the freezer that you have picked up yourself 🔥

Two open hands holding freshly picked blueberries. Blueberries have colored the palms and fingers red in few places. In the bottom right corner you can see green background.

@mojo

is a neurotoxin used to combat the pest fruit fly and acts by interrupting a chemical essential for nerve function. At certain levels, it is toxic to the human nervous system.

It was banned in the European Union in 2019, and has been classed by the US Environmental Protection Agency as a "possible human carcinogen".

It is legal to use it in Australia.

"... Poor pesticide spraying practices in the Nambucca Valley and Coffs Harbour regions...Chemical banned by European Union still used in Australia."

When you drive from Nambucca Valley to the Coffs Harbour regions you can see giant white plastic nets enclosing blueberries, raspberries and blackberries plantations. There are toxic chemicals on some berries, the water and the area.

"Banned chemical thiometon detected in berries sold at supermarkets."

"Blueberry farming has boomed in NSW, including in the Nambucca Valley, as minimal red tape is required to set up. Blueberry farms can be started without formal registration or oversight, making it hard for authorities to track pesticide use. Since January 2022, the EPA has prosecuted 21 pesticide-related incidents across a range of crops in local courts across NSW... The Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) announced a review into the use of dimethoate on blueberries, raspberries and blackberries."

Australia’s berry boom has triggered a fresh look at pesticide rules. With berry consumption more than doubling since 2017, the regulator is proposing stricter limits on a key pesticide used to fight fruit fly. Growers warn it could make berries more expensive and lead to more waste. Berries are still safe to eat, but public feedback is open until 2 September 2025.
