Heck, on a day like this, who wouldn't want to live in a boat? #boating

Under way from up on the command bridge, currently in Saratoga Passage headed toward Deception Pass. Today will be my first time transiting Deception and we'll likely arrive about 15 minutes before slack. Water is glassy smooth here, light wind, no other traffic. Cruising at just 7 knots; timing is everything when going through the pass. #boating #PugetSound #PNW

Spitzen Im Bogen, Wassily Kandinsky
Fluttering Sails, Lena Gurr

I noticed these two have similarities...

I was thinking the Kandinsky one was more about abstract ideal forms, like the idea of things...

And the other one I thought about time, maybe even just one sailboat coming and going over and over, seasons coming and going, bringing in the catch of the day...

Anyway, whatever, have a good Tuesday 😁

technically a collection of simple shapes painted in different colors, triangles, rectangles, circles, etc but they are arranged in an overlapping way that strongly indicates sailboats along a curved shoreline with two buildings near the water. The only indication of water are three curvy green lines near the buildingsthis is more obviously a building on a shoreline with sailboats in the water but it is also abstract in that the colors and shapes are blended, softening the edges and leaving everything loosely defined. The boats are rendered in a way that it's unclear where one boat ends and another starts. The colors on the shore and in the water are splotchy and nowhere is anything realistic

Working out the design of a boat cradle for my SO's Adirondack guide boat. It's a bit over engineered but the idea would be to be able to use both upper support beams as a drying rack and allow the boat to be inspected, maintained, and cleaned all in one space. The straps will be made from outdoor carpet for durability and friction-less sliding against the composite hull.

Good morning, Mastodon! Greetings from Oak Harbor, WA! #sunrise #dawn #boating

The sun peeks over the horizon at dawn through the masts of docked sailboats at Oak Harbor Marina in North Puget Sound.

I set up autopilot to take us from Bainbridge Island to Oak Harbor. It's a long, boring cruise. Now in a choppy patch of water between Whidbey and Camano Islands. 17 miles to go. I really prefer cruising less than 40 miles in a day. #boating

Pizza for dinner, made on board with sourdough obvs. 5 miles and 7 locks to Crick wharf tomorrow then the OH will collect us by car. #BoatsThatToot #Boating #GrandUnion #Braunston

May the artwork take you out onto the water on a perfect day, filled with sunshine, freedom, and companionship.

Metal print of an original oil painting depicting four men in a sailboat out on the bay.

Q on OpenCPN. How do I get boat navigation vector maps for Päijänne-Keitele? Heard one could download from Traficom the raw data and then somehow convert it to OpenCPN format? Anyone here with experience? Or even ready-made stuff? #opencpn #päijänne #keitele #vectormaps #navigation #boat #boating

It's a good thing canal lock gates are carefully balanced, because this lets one person push them open and closed. (It can take considerable effort if a boat has unbalanced the gate by crashing into it.)

To open a gate, when water levels on both sides are equal, push the beam. It's long, so it acts as a lever that reduces the effort. The beam of a lock gate is sometimes steel, but most often oak, as pictured. This beam is particularly bulky.

A man's hand and a windlass laid atop the end of a square-cut oak beam beside a steel grab handle.

This photo focuses on the end of the beam. The beam is part of a massive oak lock gate (not shown).

A lock beam is a lever that lets boaters open a wooden lock gate that can range from a very small 750 kilos to a typical large size of 1500 kilos (about ¾ to 1½ tons). This beam is probably 50×50 centimetres or 20×20 inches—and has a flat end. Its full length isn't shown in the photo but might be 7 meters or 22 feet. The very end of the beam is bound by a reinforcing, flat steel bar, to keep it from splintering.

There's a solid steel grab handle anchored in the top surface of the beam, for boaters to grab and pull, to start the gate moving. The end of the beam is painted white, though the paint has worn away on top, as has the wood, from years of use and from getting tapped by windlasses. (Boaters usually have those in one hand as they reach for the grab handle with both hands.)

The windlass in the photo is a type of spanner or wrench, one piece of steel, with a square hole on one end that fits the lock mechanism. (Mechanism not shown.) For easier winding, each side of the windlass' L-shaped handle is about 30 centimeters or 1 foot, and about 2 centimeters or ¾ inch round in diameter.

In the background is a dirt towpath and some unmowed grass. Below the beam is red-brown brick paving with some ridges set in to offer some traction to boaters as they strain to push the beam.
