Beginning to train the #bonsai in the nursery pot before root trimming, and transferring it to the bonsai pot. I attended one of John Naka's sessions and he said his father said you don't blow your nose in the paper then wrap your sandwich in it. He said his father used a different reference, but we all got it. Anyway, here is the tree with a slight bend and some more branches removed. It will turn into a windswept tree once in the pot. The trunk will be at a slight angle in the pot as well. 6/

Tree, trimmed and with one copper wire moving the major branch rightward. The copper wire is buried in the soil, wrapped around the trunk and up the major branch. When in the pot, that rightmost branch will be low to the ground and the trunk will lean to the right as well.

Impermanence, asymmetry, seasonality and connection to nature are hallmarks of this Brooklyn Japanese garden. Could our electronic devices bring similar peace and relaxation?

My cherry #bonsai sized #tree grows a tiny fruit 🥰

A tiny cherry on a small tree. For scale a finger shows that the cherry is just half the size of a fingertip.

My fave painting I’ve done. Finished piece.
Uprooted-Flying Geese Series, 2025
24x36” Acrylic on MDF Board.

It’s sooooo much nicer IRL and big!

A woman with dark hair is in a seated swagger pose, head up, looking at viewer, her legs are manspreading, wearing a gold emergency blanket. She is holding an uprooted Bonsai Pine Tree. Behind her is a quilt pattern with the Morning Star pattern & Circles of Geese using the ‘flying geese quilting block’ in golds, ivory, and a rusty red and dark blue grey base. Flanking the quilt are large blue vases with images of white clouds and flying cranes, filled with gladiola in red and yellow. The green bench she sits on is trimmed with yellow caution tape and at her feet is a tangle of red danger tape.

Moin.

Juniperus osteosperma (Utah juniper). I love these little natural bonsai trees I found on this mesa top. They're literally all over the place. It's an elfin forest! Utah junipers generally grow to ~15 feet and can live up to a 1,000 years. This specimen, growing from a crack in the sandstone, is only ~3 feet tall. Guessing by its appearance and the size of the trunk it could be 300-400 years old or maybe more!

A black and white portrait photo of a small stunted tree, with a very thick trunk, maybe eight inches in diameter, growing on a flat rocky surface. There's a few small scrubby plants on the tree's left and in the background. The tree leans at a sharp angle away from the camera. Its top is bulbous with tiny leafs growing on short stunted limbs. The sky appears dark with rain clouds.

#ScribesAndMakers 13. Self-Promo day: Show us what you're proud of.

I also recently repotted my humble jade bonsai into a nicer handmade pot. the tree is about as tall as my hand. it's just been acclimated to the outdoor sun, so i expect a season of strong growth to fatten it up, and add some ramification (branching).

WIP from a previous calendar bonsai tree coloring.

It seems like I’m always in a hurry yet not having enough time lately. Need to slow down.

Now or Later? Should we implement a feature or tidy the code first?

Here's the first video where I'm talking about #software development while working on my #bonsai - It's a bit experimental, so what do you think?

We recently spent an afternoon in the Japanese Friendship Garden near downtown Phoenix, Arizona. It’s a quiet green refuge in the Arizona desert.

A stop at the #NCArboretum, and a wander through the #Bonsai exhibit. Unlike @BobHorowitz this is VERY like me, and anyone who has followed me has probably seen these very trees several times already.

But here they are again.

A bonsai about 2 feet tall of a Blue Atlas Cedar, one of my very favorite trees, who are generally NOT 2 feet tall. It's in a handsome low ceramic pot, has a few exposed roots and quite a large trunk at the bottom. The trunk is slightly kinked, and no branches or needles begin until you are more than halfway up the plant. It has a handsome triangular shape, and I absolutely love it.Another bonsai, this one a boxwood, and I don't recall ever seeing it before. This is also rooted in a low pot (this one is blue) and rests on a slatted wooden platform, displayed against a large concrete wall. Basically everything but the plant and the pot is grey.

The tree has a light brown trunk with split into 2 trunks about 6" up, and then a variety of other branches from there, each with a small assortment of the classic little rounded boxwood leaves. Considering how slow growing boxwood is in general I couldn't even guess how old this must be.

It looks like a tree, which is very strange being made out of a shrub. Glad to have seen this one!

Now, to begin on the #bonsai pot project that has been bugging me all week...

2025-06-06

Here is the pot and the raw wood piece I'm going to make the base for the pot out of. Sorry, it's sitting on my somewhat messy desk. #bonsai in the making.

Step 2 (one was buying it) is to remove the second trunk so the bush starts to look more like a tree. As John Naka said, "love the tree, not the branch."

#Bonsai

3/

Same tree, same locale, more open now because there is only one trunk; instead of being bushy, it is more of a tree.
