Ruins of Pac’s Palace, Dowspuda, Poland

Ludwig Michał Pac (1778-1835), general, fought alongside Napoleon, distinguished himself in the 1812 campaign. After Napoleon’s defeat, he went to England, where he learned modern agriculture. He used his knowledge in the country, including on the Dowspuda estate. He took part in the November Uprising of 1830. After its fall, he emigrated, and his estate was confiscated.

The construction of the palace began in 1820. The design was prepared by the Italian architect Piotr Bosio. Count Pac, dissatisfied with the design, entrusted the execution of new plans to another Italian architect - Henryk Marconi. It is not known what part of the design of the completed palace was the work of Bosio and what part was Marconi.

In 1823, the construction was completed. Work on the interiors was underway. A landscape park was established around the palace according to the design of the English gardener John Heiton.

For Pac’s participation in the November Uprising in 1830, the Russian government confiscated the Dowspuda estate. By a decree of 16 March 1836, the tsar granted it to General Sulima. The palace began to be systematically devastated. The lessee of the estate, Stefan Horoczko, led to its destruction within a few years. The end of the building came when its last lessee decided to sell the ruins as building material for barracks in Suwałki.

The Upland Gate, Gdansk, Poland

The Renaissance Upland Gate, located at Bogusławski Street, inaugurating the Royal Route, is the most representative entrance gate to Gdańsk. Built in the 16th century as part of the city fortifications, it took its current shape in 1588, after reconstruction led by Willem van den Blocke. In the attic, you can admire the bas-reliefs of the coats of arms of Poland, Gdańsk and Royal Prussia. The Latin inscription above the main entrance reads: “Justice and piety are the two foundations of all kingdoms”.

The Green Gate, Gdansk, Poland

It was built in the years 1564-1568 on the site of the older - mentioned in 1357 - the Kogi Gate. The authorship of the design is attributed to both the Dutch builder Master Regnier and Hans Kramer, who came from Dresden. Around 1573, a wing was added to the western elevation. The ground floor of the gate housed the city scales, while the wing housed the day and night city guards.

It was supposed to be a royal residence, but despite its beautiful interiors, no king ever lived there. As a consolation, the future wife of the king - Władysław IV - Maria Ludwika Gonzaga stopped here while passing through.

The gate was rebuilt - for the first time in the 19th century, when a third floor was added and the roof was redesigned. 50 years later, a fourth gate was built. After World War II, part of the building collapsed in a fire. The Green Gate was rebuilt in the 1950s, but it was not until 2002 that the interior was opened to visitors for the first time after the war.

Klucze i piloty idą do lamusa.

Umożliwiają tworzenie spersonalizowanych scenariuszy i harmonogramów dostępu.

Rosnąca popularność inteligentnych systemów dostępu pokazuje zmianę w podejściu do bezpieczeństwa.

The Market Gate, Elbląg, Poland

Built in the 14th century as one of nine gates in the city’s now-defunct fortifications, the building is one of the most valuable and recognizable buildings in Elbląg. The 26-meter-high Market Gate can be admired from the outside, and in the summer season (from May to September) you can also go inside. It is definitely worth doing so, as a viewing terrace was built in its upper part, from which there is a beautiful panorama of the Old Town.

Święto Trzech Króli

Tutaj przez wiele lat ktoś trzymał się tradycji oznaczania drzwi literami K+M+B i rokiem w święto Objawienia Pańskiego. Litery nawiązują do legendarnych imion trzech mędrców: Kacpra, Melchiora i Baltazara, choć prawdopodobnie wywodzą się z łacińskiego sentencji Christus Mansionem Benedicat (Niech Chrystus pobłogosławi ten dom).

Branicki Palace (gate), Białystok, Poland (part 1 of 2)

The first mentions of the palace date back to the 16th century - the design of the Gothic-Renaissance residence was attributed to Hiob Bretfus, who had other palace and castle projects to his credit. The palace acquired its final late Baroque appearance thanks to three architects: Tylman van Gameren, Jan Zygmunt Deybel, and Jakub Fontana. Although the name of the palace does not suggest it, it was built not only as a castle with a moat but also at the commission of the Wiesiołowski family.

The heir of the Wiesiołowski family, Krzysztof, died without heirs and had previously bequeathed the estate to the Republic of Poland. After the war, the castle was awarded to Stefan Czarniecki for his merits (along with Białystok). He, in turn, passed it on to his daughter, Katarzyna Aleksandra, who married Jan Klemens Branicki. Jan Klemens’s father commissioned Tylman van Gameren to remodel the castle. Thus, the Wiesiołowski Castle became the Branicki Palace.

The last reconstruction was carried out between 1750 and 1771 by the aforementioned Jakub Fontana. It was during this time that the palace gained its Rococo interiors, which can still be admired today; Fontana also brought sculptures by Jan Chryzostom Redler to the palace. The decor, full of stucco and paintings, harmonized with the Branickis’ interests - artistic activities flourished in the residence, where poets and writers gathered, and a theater, orchestra, and ballet company operated. The estate was visited by kings and rulers as well as envoys. In the 18th century, the first military school began operating near the palace.

Opatowska Gate, Sandomierz, Poland

It is a Gothic entrance gate from the 2nd half of the 14th century. It was built by Casimir the Great as part of the city’s defensive walls. The planning of the old town also dates from this period. At that time, the city was guarded by four gates. In addition to the Opatowska Gate, you could get to the center through the Zawichojska Gate, the Lublin Gate, also known as the Fisherman’s Gate, and the Krakow Gate.

Currently, the Opatowska Gate is approximately 30 m high, although originally it was slightly lower. The generosity of the wallet of the Sandomierz doctor Stanisław Bartolon in the 16th century allowed the gate to be enriched with an attic. It is worth remembering that of the entire Sandomierz city defense system, only the Opatowska Gate together with adjacent fragments of the walls and the lower part of the tower have survived to this day.

The Radziwiłł palace and park complex in Biała Podlaska, Poland (part 2)

Entry gate

The Baroque gate, built of sandstone, was the main entrance to the residence. Built in the years 1699-1702, probably by the architect Józefat Jeziornicki, modeled on the triumphal arch of Constantine the Great in Rome, it was the showcase of the entire palace complex. It has a rich sculptural decoration of a triumphal and military character.

Gate tower

The tower is a Baroque building, erected by Józefat Jeziornicki in the years 1699-1701, projected on a square plan, framed from the bottom with two-storey buildings. It consists of five floors. It is topped with a Baroque helmet on a gloriette. The corners of the tower are decorated with two parallel pilaster strips running side by side. There was a clock on the tower from the side of the palace. In the past, the gate tower served as a guard and a prison.

Neck

Built in the years 1699-1701 and rebuilt in the 1920s, it connects the entrance gate with the gate tower. It is a brick and plastered building, on a quarter-circle plan, covered with a gable roof. In the past, it served as a communication link between the main gate and the tower through which the entrance to the courtyard led. Passing through the dark tunnel of the neck and seeing the palace building located at its exit aroused respect for the power of the Radziwiłł family.

Ojców - Glove Rock and Krakow Gate (Poland)

The name of the rock is associated with a legend according to which during one of the Tartar invasions, the local population sought shelter in the Dark Cave, the entrance of which is located nearby. God covered the entrance with his own hand, thus saving people from death or shameful captivity. The rock, consisting of five finger-like columns in its upper part, resembles a hand in shape. It is well visible both from the bottom of the valley and from the tourist trail leading through the Crown Mountain.

Krakow Gate is built of blocks of rocky limestone, about 15-20 meters high. According to legend, the distance between the columns of the Krakow Gate is constantly decreasing year by year. When the rocks come together completely, it will be the end of the world. That is why those passing through the gate place sticks and poles under them, trying to prevent them from moving. After all, we can’t let the world end. ;)

The gate tower of the Ojców Castle, Poland

The ruins of Ojcow Castle lie on top of a 36-meter-high rock, in the middle of the Prądnik Valley.

The castle was erected by Casimir the Great, and a legend says that the name castrum Oczec was created in honor of his father Wladyslaw Lokietek, who once found a hiding place from enemy armies near Ojcow.

Originally, the castle consisted of an octagonal tower of ultimate defense perched on rocks towering above the rest of the hill, a perimeter of walls encircling the hill irregularly along its edge, and a quadrangular gate tower attached to the rocks at the foot of the donjon. A dwelling house was built along the eastern section of the perimeter walls. The promontory was cut off from the rest of the hill by a deep ditch, over which a drawbridge was thrown.

In 1400 the castle was pawned by Wladyslaw Jagiello. Subsequent starosts were representatives of many wealthy families, including the Szafraniec, Boner, Myszkowski and Korycin families.

During the Swedish Deluge, the invaders probably seized the castle without a fight and arranged it as a weapons and food warehouse.

After the partition of Poland at the end of the 18th century, the castle began to be neglected and fell into disrepair, eventually the inhabitants abandoned it in 1826.

At present, the gate tower, octagonal tower, the base of the walls of the southern building and remnants of the perimeter walls are preserved here. A well is also preserved in the courtyard.
