It's astonishing how well Bram Stoker understood women and the challenges they face, mostly imposed by society. Everyone remembers him for Dracula, though they often dismiss Mina from their memories. I recommend The Man (also known as The Gates Of Life) as further reading.

A vampire for World Dracula Day

This deeply political, unpleasant interpretation of Stoker's Dracula can not not be seen against the backdrop of political movements like the #RAF and West-Germany's youth revolting against the failed #Denazification that the country underwent under supervision of the Allied occupying forces.

Note the usage of colour and grouping of people; Klaus Mann's Mephisto (1981) borrowed quite a few visuals from Jonathan.

Happy #DraculaDay to my fellow Gothic Fiends. Stoker's enormously influential tale first published on this day in 1897, and just like the Count himself, seemingly immortal, never out of print, endlessly adapted to stage, film, games, even to muppet form, a mythos endlessly malleable to fit each generation's fear and desires.

Salads, Sauces, &c.

SALAD.
(Mrs PIRIE, Bank House, Lonmay).
Wash and pick two heads of lettuce. Shred them, and add the white of a hard boiled egg cut in rings. Pound the yolk. Add a little salt, a large teaspoonful of made mustard, one breakfastcupful of cream, and a little vinegar. Mix well. Pour over the lettuce, and turn over the whole a few times with a spoon and fork. If liked a few slices of tomato may be added.

THE "DRACULA" SALAD.
(Mrs BRAM STOKER, 26 St George's Square, London, S.W.)
Arrange alternate slices of ripe tomatoes, and ripe, purple, egg-shaped plums in dish, and dress with oil and vinegar French dressing.

BREAD SAUCE.
(Mrs J. SMITH, Easterton, Peterhead).
1/2 pint milk.
2 cloves.
1 small onion.
2 oz. bread crumbs.
Pepper and salt.
1 oz. butter.

Stick the cloves in the onion. Put the milk in a saucepan. Add the onion, and set at the side of stove for half an hour. Warm it, but do not boil. Shake out the onion and add the crumbs, butter, salt, and a good pinch of pepper. Stir until the bread crumbs have absorbed the milk.

On This Day: May 26 In 1897, Dracula by Bram Stoker was published in London. With one book, Stoker gave the world Count Dracula, rewrote horror literature, and set the template for every vampire story that followed. Some legends refuse to die. #OnThisDay #Dracula #BramStoker #LiteraryHistory

Liva Seiuli's exploration of Bram Stoker reveals how the iconic author of "Dracula" made an indelible cultural mark, despite not achieving financial success. From a fragile childhood to football stardom at Trinity College, Stoker's journey led him to a civil service role, drama criticism, and a key partnership with Sir Henry Irving. His horror tales and debut novel paved the way for his lasting influence.
