I'm feeling pleased with how the little kitchen garden is coming along. Broccoli is poppin', collards are lush, peas are coming (slowly but surely with this warm weather we had), and look at these strawbs! I rescued these from the overgrown mess this space was 8 months ago.

I'm excited to start harvesting!

The Gentle Spikes;

Something on the side. Shot this yesterday on my Huawei in RAW, and honestly, I was aiming for that flower, but it turned out blurry and the spikes were sharp. So, to save the image I've cropped it (a big chunk of it) and rotated the image, with some additional touch-ups. Glad though I could get such a close-up with the phone (with the help of the crop). However, I need to work fast and shoot these in macro with my Canon before it's all POOF! gone...

Brassica 2 (3D);

It's 3D Saturday! Posting here a recent shot I've taken with my phone last Thursday. Actually, it's a 2nd, and I'm posting it first. I'll try to post the 1st one, which was shot the day before that even, later at night (my time), though it is probably not that interesting. I hope I got the name right, though. I've tried to identify the plant online, and seems the genus is "Brassica" in general, but there are many species under that genus and I'm not sure which is which.
Creating this one was a bit of struggle somehow (technical issues), and I had to work with the 3D glasses on to check the effect in the making (caution: it might be unnerving for the eyes and quite stressful). I've removed the colors of the image to make it look better under the effect as colors caused "ghosting" (and somewhat hard to work with because of the green shade we have over the place). Yet, with all of that, you might experience a bit of ghosting in the background; juuuuuust a bit ...

New episode out now! It was time to start thinking about winter--as much as I didn't want to. At least, it meant more planting. I turned the former potato beds into brassica beds for winter and planted kale, cauliflower, and broccoli there.

I bought something called cherry plums or the like yesterday: looks like a cherry tastes like a plum. And I thought to myself “I wonder how closely related they are” but then just realized the are probably just different cultivars of #brassica.

#PakChoi #plants in 3 gallon pots.
“Pak Choi” translates to “white vegetable” in Cantonese due to their white stems. Cultivation began in the #YangtzeRiver Delta region & spread to other parts of Asia, thanks to traders & migrating populations.

Pak choi looks almost identical to bok choy but they're two different plants. Pak choi has darker leaves as it matures. Pak choi stems are white, more visibly so when matured. Bok choy stems are pale green. Pak choi has more of a peppery undertone taste, while bok choy has subtle sweetness. We grow both of these similar plants in our backyard food gardens.

I have 3 blueberry plants & only one has produced berries so far.

Harvested 2 of 2 batches of pak choy. Surprisingly easy to grow after you pick off the first few waves of slugs. Even into the warmer weeks it grew well.

Just in time too because this bag is about to host some mini melon seedlings.

And my plastic bags I just wash and reuse for raw, unwashed veg I collect.

What do #broccoli, #cabbage, #cauliflower, #brusselssprouts, #collardgreens, #kohlrabi, and #kale all have in common? The answer is… their #species!
Kale and cabbage and the others are the same plant. A wild mustard plant (Brassica oleracea) was the original source of the diverse forms of #Brassica that we are familiar with today. All these forms of Brassica oleracea were the result of artificial selection by early #farmers and plant breeders.
