finally got a chance to see the remodel of the #abq #sunport which brought some nice improvements to the small airport.

but also very excited to see the #art of my friend #cactuseddie on display - a wall #painting of a #cactus that was saved from a remodel of a downtown #brewery . i like that it still has the electrical outlet in place.

Looks like a #RocketMotor #CombustionChamber but is actually part of our #brewery infusion vessel for making #KereruBrewing #ForGreatJustice and #ImperialNibs #Porters.

Shiny stainless steel fills the frame as we peer down into the cylindrical conical interior. As the vessel has aged it has developed subtle warping and distortion of the metal which has become rather interesting looking. There’s a mesh false bottom and some temperature probes visible.

This was a great honor. Over the weekend, Alecraft Brewery in PA asked me to bring my book BEER POUR to help celebrate at a party for a new brew they were introducing—word of mouth, folks, word of mouth. The book looks right at home on a bar! #wordofmouth #books #book #beer #beersandbooks #brew #brewery #alecraft #advertising #launch #new #business #businessStrategy #bars #party

I was asked if Alecraft Brewery could feature my book at a party they were having to introduce a new brew. I said, "Hell, yeah!"

An overdue return to homebrewing–with an Instant Pot vibe

I had not meant to let almost two years lapse between my last batch of homebrewed beer and this Saturday night’s–but in my defense, 2024 had a lot going on. By which I mean, it included a new kitchen featuring an induction cooktop incompatible with the five-gallon pot I’d been using to brew beer since 2012.

If I’d just bought an induction-compatible pot of that size, I probably would have gotten around to homebrewing sometime last winter, but instead last spring, a friend offered to loan me the electric brewing kettle he’d had sitting around his house.

This Gigawort kettle from Minnesota-based Northern Brewer is a much more complicated beast than the metal container I’d put on a burner of the old gas cooktop. It has a digital display, a temperature sensor, computerized controls and setup instructions sufficiently complex to warrant reading the wiki in Reddit’s r/homebrewing.

Instead of doing that, I spent the next 20 months procuring beer the usual, no-kitchen-time-required way. But the imminent onset of the holiday season finally persuaded me to buy an ingredient kit and drag this contraption out of the basement.

After spending more time than I would have imagined fussing with the valve that screws into the side of the kettle, I set this to heat up 2.5 gallons of water–and realized that I was dealing with the homebrewing equivalent of the Instant Pot that’s been a mainstay of my cooking since 2018.

Much as that computerized pressure cooker does one thing and does it well, the Gigawort seems optimized for one job. After bringing the water to a steeping temperature in about 25 minutes–much faster than the old gas stove handled that task–this kettle held itself to roughly 160 degrees instead of leaving me to chase a gas burner up and down for 20 minutes.

But an Instant Pot can also have its fussy moments, and the Gigawort did too at the start of the boiling phase when it shut off with an E4 error–a result, going by some quick searching, of malt extract getting stuck or scorched to the bottom. Unplugging the device and pressing a reset button inconveniently located on its underside fixed that… after a second try.

This kettle was also more complicated to clean up, since I couldn’t dump the entire thing into the sink and instead had to wash it upside-down to keep soap and water away from the electronics in the base.

Are the results of this venture into computer-assisted homebrewing any good? The brew finished inside the recipe’s documented range of original-gravity figures, but I can’t offer a review until after a few more weeks–during which I’ll have to trust yeast to do the most important work.

Swansea’s Drop Bear Beer Co. lands first national supermarket deal with Morrisons

From Monday 24 November, the company’s new Peach Cut Lager will be available in 475 Morrisons stores across the UK, marking the brand’s first national rollout with a major retailer.

Founded in 2019 by Sarah and Joelle Drummond, Drop Bear has grown rapidly from a bold start-up into one of the UK’s leading independent alcohol-free brewers. The company opened its dedicated alcohol-free brewery in Swansea in 2023, backed by a £1.9 million equity investment.

A breakthrough moment for Welsh brewing

Co-founder and Director of Sales and Marketing Joelle Drummond said the Morrisons deal was a landmark moment:

“We are proud to share this milestone moment, as it marks the first time Drop Bear will be available on shelves across the UK. As a Welsh business, this achievement is especially meaningful. Wales boasts incredible talent and outstanding food and drink brands, yet gaining visibility on the national stage can be a challenge. Securing this listing demonstrates not only the strength of our products, but the growing recognition of the innovation coming out of Wales.”

The new listing features Peach Cut Lager, a 0.5% ABV fruit lager described as a “crisp European lager with a smooth stone fruit twist.” It will be sold in four-packs of 330ml cans with an RRP of £5.

Scaling up to meet demand

Drop Bear’s range is already available via Tesco (Wales), Ocado, and East of England Co-op, with exports to Finland and Australia. To meet growing demand, the company has acquired additional brewing equipment that will increase capacity by 700%.

Managing Director Sarah Drummond said:

“In just two years since opening our brewery, we’ve seen phenomenal growth in demand for Drop Bear. We’re scaling up fast, from growing our team to investing in equipment that increases our capacity by 700%. Partnering with Morrisons is a huge step forward, making it even easier for more people across the UK to get their hands on Drop Bear.”

A rising category

The Low & No alcohol category remains one of the fastest-growing parts of the UK beer market, with NielsenIQ data showing continued double-digit value growth. Fruited lagers like Peach Cut are especially popular with younger shoppers and flexi-drinkers who are moderating their alcohol intake.

Drop Bear’s beers are vegan-friendly, gluten-free, low-calorie, and made with 100% natural ingredients. The brewery is also the world’s first certified carbon-neutral alcohol-free brewer, and a B Corp™️ member committed to ethical and sustainable practices.

The Drapers Arms entrusted us with their wooden cask and we thought it would be perfect to fill it with Dead and Berry'd, our Robust Fruited Porter, brewed using fruit foraged from Arnos Vale Cemetery. It's been in it's Cask(et) for a month now infusing some of the wonderful flavours from the wood. How will it taste? Like us, you'll have to head to The Drapers Arms on Monday the 24th of November to find out.

Today is our first round match in the Bristol Brewery Challenge at The Sirens Calling in Portishead.

It's our first attempt and in the first round we’ve been drawn against our good friends at The Incredible Brewing Company in Brislington. That's tough competition!

We've entered our new Pale Ale "Hail to the King". It's a cask cousin of our house pale "Elvis has left the Building". We hope you like it! It'll be on at the brewpub next week.
