Women who put the rage in suffrage. League of Women Voters of San Francisco. First, some real truth. Although white suffragists praised equality, many betrayed working class people, immigrants, and people of color, especially Black women. We celebrate their victories, but acknowledge the significant harm they caused.Susan B. Anthony. Co-founded the National Woman Suffrage Association, a predecessor to the League of Women Voters. Convicted for voting while female, denouncing it as “the greatest judicial outrage history has ever recorded”. Traveled constantly for over 50 years, giving hundreds of speeches to demand voting rights for women.Ida B. Wells. Born into slavery, became a prominent activist who exposed the horrors of lynching and opposed segregation. Championed Black women’s right to vote and fought racism in the suffrage movement. Refused to be silenced or to follow unjust rules, even though she faced threats to her life.Alice Paul. Led attention-grabbing actions in the fight for the vote, such as the “Silent Sentinels” protest and hunger strikes. Organized an iconic, massive parade of suffragists, who were attacked by crowds of men while police did nothing. Drafted the Equal Rights Amendment and lobbied for the 1964 Civil Rights Act ban on sexual discrimination.
